The AV Club review seems pretty fair.

Just got back from the theater...

First three quarters were fairly slow, last quarter was full of action, and last 5-10 minutes were as exciting as any previous Star Wars movie, except for a brief but unfortunate CGI moment that I think could have been handled much better. The effect I'm referring to was surprising considering how well Admiral Tarkin was handled.

Yeah, if they had a movie where everyone was cgi like the ones in question it would have looked okay, but to have them in the same scenes as real actors it was a bit jarring.

I thought the movie was pretty good for what it was. I didn't have the expectations I had when I went to see The Force
Awakens and realize that as a complimentary film to the main series it probably wasn't going to feel quite the same. The
story and look of the movie was fine, most of the dialogue was good and they threw in a number of humorous moments,
usually spoken by the droid K-2SO but even Vader has a pretty good one liner. My problem with it was that I never really
got emotionally invested in any of the characters so it wasn't really like I was on the edge of my seat wondering if they
would be ok or not. Maybe knowing how the story kind of ends took away some of that tension as well. The CGI thing
was a little bit off putting as mentioned earlier. The Tarkin scenes were pretty clean and some people maybe wouldn't
even notice if they weren't paying much attention. The other obvious scene was just awkward and I didn't like it much.
Overall it was a fun watch and I will continue to go to these side stories as long as they pique my interest. Still very
excited about the Han Solo movie. Nothing in the movie to really worry about with kids other than the violence, but I
I guess kids see so much of that on TV today. I think the biggest issue for kids may be trying to understand what is going
on. The casual fan might not get all the connections if they haven't seen A New Hope.

Got tixx for the Saturday Dolby Atmos - going with my family's version of Rey (my 8 yr old daughter, who is already a Star Wars fan).

You can't even ascertain what any of the plot is from the trailers. Nobody cares about this stupid ass side story. People only ever watched Star Wars for one thing: lightsabers. It's the only unique and cool thing about the universe. This is poorly marketed dreck that the geek/nerd crowd will rabidly consume like every other pile of shit that has pandered to them the last fifteen years.

I watch for Vader.

The fact that they crapped all over his origin story is the biggest disappointment in the history of cinema.

I think you'll be happy. Considering how Episode IV begins, the end of this movie is a fanboy's dream (which I admit I am). It's the first part of the movie that I thought was uninspired, though even during that there were cool references. I would go back to see again just for the last act.

Yea its pretty damn good. Best since Empire Strikes Back. Not the best movie I've seen this week even, but its going to deserve the absolute carpet bombing of money that its going to make. At least moreso than The Force Awakens, which now looks pretty shitty in comparison to Rogue One.

It makes a difference when you have a talented director. Who knew? Not that being a better director than JJ is a high bar or anything.

This sentence from the NY Times review could apply equally to just about any of the Star Wars movies:
Quote:
Millions of people will sit through this thoroughly mediocre movie (directed with basic competence by Gareth Edwards from a surprisingly hackish script by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy) and convince themselves that it’s perfectly delightful.

i was thoroughly entertained throughout. i never found it boring or slow. it had to set up a lot, and it paid it all off extremely well. my two favorite characters were the blind guy and his keeper.

i actually found K2 to be a little much. i did find some of the dialog to be a little too contemporary at times as well.

would've been interesting to see how the laborers lived too. we get a little glimpse into that but it certainly looks like the imperial forces are extremely oppressive. a "day in the life" sequence would have benefited the story, made us care a lot more about the rebellion. especially since jyn's character is torn. that was the biggest weakness, that jyn is supposedly not on anybody's side but we're never really sure why or what she's thinking. that could've been fleshed out a little more.

i really like the way the movie was shot. a lot of dreariness on the planets, drudgery, made it feel gloomy. it worked for symbolizing the imperial world. the warzone scenes were very fitting. effectively done.

i saw it at IMAX 3-D and was very underwhelmed by the 3D. the IMAX experience was fine...but i think i was sitting a little close. got vertigo a few times.

and one more shoutout, to being able to place Grand Moff Tarkin back in. that was really something.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

I liked it, but bringing back Jar Jar Binks was mind puzzling.

Movie was excellent. Must be seen in Dolby Atmos - it is more like being on a ride than being at the movie, as the reclining chars have rumblepacks in them that shake when ships fly overhead, etc. The screen is also much higher definition and can handle deeper shades of black.

Really, my only complaint was that they deked us out of the usual star Wars intro music blaring with the typical impressive yellow story scroll.

They showed 2 lines and a quick blurb of music - I thought that was a total copout and a nutpunch to fans.

Besides that, though, everyone who loves the series will be pretty satisfied with this movie.

The way they make things look and feel Pre-EpIV works, too. Lots of crustiness on the SFX.

I agree with WZ on K2 totally being out of place with the way he speaks.

4 of 4 stars. Great effects, decent characters, great cameos. . . Couldn't ask for anything more entertaining on a cold winter day.

Just went to the 5 PM showing. Not a Star Wars guy but I liked it. Honestly, I enjoyed The Force Awakens better. I think if I was more of a die hard I might have liked this more. This seemed way heavier than Force Awakens but still a good watch.
