While dying in a fire sounds really bad, most people die from the smoke inhalation long before the flames burn their body to a crisp. I imagine the lack of oxygen in the lungs would be similar to drowning, but I've not done a lot of research on that subject. It seems like it would be painful nonetheless.

Most people pass out (or go into a deeper sleep) from the carbon monoxide before they feel any sort of pain or drowning sensation. That is why it is most important to make sure you smoke detectors are working. If your house catches fire in the middle of the night while you are sleeping, odds are you won't wake up unless the smoke alarms start blaring.

That's a really good point I hadn't considered. So it many ways, it is peaceful to die in a fire. I guess that's the opposite of what badrogue had intended to convey. Perhaps death by drowning would be a more preferable way to inflict pain upon death, or just lighting the body directly on fire... you could soak some clothes in alcohol first to ensure they stay lit. Probably would want to chain them upright as well so there's no potential for stop, drop, and roll cutting the death short.

I would figure that even if you were clear-headed and aware when your person finally went alight, it really can't hurt for too long before your nerve endings are destroyed by which point it's all over but the smoldering.
