Indeed, the phone call must have freaked you out. I hope it never happens again.

He's tired and embarrassed. I'm tired and my head hurts. He and Mr Spaulding were transferred to another hospital for overnight and a morning test. I'm home with my daughter and the dog. It all sucks.

Don't be afraid to get a second or even third opinion from an outside source. Look into a highly rated childrens hospital or an academic center with a pediatric neurologist. The doctor he is seeing should not be offended and if he is who cares? The more information the better and the more different people you get the better. It is certainly possible that one doctor won't have had an experience with something while another may have. This is also why it is good to go to a childrens hospital or an academic center with a pediatric neurologist. They will likely have a bigger range of experiences simply because they get referred patients from other areas.

Good luck and try and keep a positive attitude for everyone involved.

Sorry to hear Spaulding. Hopefully the doctors can identify the issue and stop it from happening again.

He has been diagnosed with absence seizure disorder/epilepsy. He will be on medication for a few years and go in for testing periodically. They hope he will grow out of it and might have them for a bit til they get the medication figured out. So yay! There is some household discord on how to handle sports and activities which I'm sure you will all look forward to hearing about but we are good. Thanks!

I have a niece that had this or a similar issue and is now 18. No issues now. Chin up. He is a boy, so it should be easier to explain he needs to get over embarrassed and live and move forward. He is not a marooon for gosh sakes.
good luck.

I'm having a little trouble coming up with what to say to class/school. His first one was at camp for school. This most recent one was during a Christmas show that the kindergartners do. Any ideas?

People are more acceptable to these things I think. I would hope a good teacher might explain at an appropriate level what might happen some time in the future. Hang in there.

I am not sure what you have to say other than tell them he is has recently experienced seizures and then maybe mention what should generally be done for him if he has a seizure. I don't believe he is fragile, and please don't treat him so. Maybe think through if there is anything that could have possibly triggered them. Is he social? Do social settings or fights stress him out? Whatever the cause it can be and will be overcome. He is going to be a normal kid. Treat him that way with the exception he takes a pill now and again. Monitor the pill taking too. After a couple of years the pills were not helping, and the seizures had stopped. My niece pretty much outgrew them.

Spaulding I had been diagnosed with that myself as a child... it didn't manifest in seizures but it did give me migraines... docs started me off on phenobarbital. I took that until high school. At some point it just went away entirely. I haven't had meds since I was 14 or so maybe 15 and it has not happened since.

Yes, you tell anyone who has a problem to go fuck themselves.

Good to hear. He's normal. We'll see how he feels but I'd let him play hockey tomorrow like last time. I don't think anybody makes fun of him or has a problem with it but it'd be scary to see one of your friends or classmates see you fall over like that every couple months. And they might help us see what triggers them or something and know what to do if he has another one.
