100% Howard Nathan for me.

I still remember where I was when I heard he failed out of school.

He was hit by a drunk driver and is in a wheelchair.

yea I know, tragic end to a downward spiral.

Buddy of mine was in Peoria and heard someone yelling his name and turned around and it was Nathan in a wheel chair. Hadn't seen the guy in a decade and didn't know he was paralyzed.

Teddy Grubbs. Sonny Cox never forgave The Meyers for screwing over Teddy Grubbs. I remember when he killed UCLA as a Freshman. I was about 7 at the time. One of my best friends is from his old neighborhood. Dude was good but got on drugs and lost his mind. You'd still see him walking around the summer leagues even while he was fucked up. By all accounts the Meyers tried to help him but he just didn't want to be helped

I remember being puzzled about his story until I realized why older guys who knew him really didn't want to talk about him. Looking back, it's really weird how guys were perceived to have fallen off the radar because of drugs. In my old neighborhood, I still see some of those kind of guys and am always taken aback at how completely out of it they still seem.

Efrem Winters always struck me as verging on the same bizarre fate. I distinctly remember seeing him in Champaign and being disturbed by what was seemingly happening to him (or what in part he was doing to himself).

Grubbs and psychological problems. The drugs were a self medication

I think he started exposing himself to women. He was in prison at Dixon with my partner. I think Grubbs is out now.

Correct.

That is what officially ended Grubbs hoops career.

I only remember Leon Smith from his interview with Mully.

"Keep in touch Leon."

".....okay..."

Ronnie was just to short to play the game he wanted to play, but damn could he get up.

I remember one day I was at Alumni hall playing bball and Ronnie was on the court next to me playing. He got a breakaway and no one was chasing him so he started walking in. Got under the basket and was about to lay it in when I yelled at him "cmon Ronnie, dunk it!". He looked at me, gave me a nod and went up from a complete standstill and did a full Dominique Wilkins windmill jam.

Leon Smith was just raw. Didn't do anything well but he really long arms and was legit 6'10-6'11. He kind of lost his mind over a well known athlete that plays WNBA basketball.

Cappie?

Smith had a fucked up childhood, group homes, foster homes. His brother played at Gordon. Jerry something, I can't remember his last name. Maybe Sanders.

He was in the league for a cup of coffee. Actually started a few games for the Wizzards. Was hoping he's at least catch on with a team and ride the bench for a few years.

Yep that was his brother and yep on Cappie. I was really familiar with that situation. All five of the kids were in the system and I even taught one of his younger sisters who also was a ball player. Just a fucked up deal. I was a really young teacher at the time all that happened. I even did a little sub work while he was still at King in 97. Had him in a few of my classes then too

Rashard Griffith has to be one of the most couriest cases.

He could have played a long time in the NBA, even if it was just a high paid backup. Instead, he played his entire pro career in Europe and never seemed to look back. I don't know if the money was so great in Europe that he had no reason to come back or if he was just leaving behind baggage but the NBA never seemed like an attraction to him.

I remember he got arrested at Phillips or Dunbar for stalking his girlfriend, didn't know she was a hoop star. Is that why he tried to kill himself?

I think Rashard made good dough in Europe and married a woman, think he did quite good for himself.

That's gotta be one of the best misspellings of a word I've ever seen on a message board.

The money in Europe is pretty great. My old drinking buddy Tommy Kleinschmidt had a helluva nice career in Japan. Making mid to high 6 figures per year, he became a fan favorite with his long blonde mullet. Think he spent a number of years there before retiring and coming back to Chicago.

It was Marshall High School. Yep that was why he attempted to kill himself.

I met him when i was about 15 or 16 and he still had it. He was about 40 at the time and you could see the damage that drugs had done to him. He told him I was talking shit to him. I said yeah that sounds about right.

Tell me you actually saw Lamar Mundane. I vaguely remember Isiaah or Aguirre talking him up like he was the man.

I'd always just seem to miss him and had begun to wonder if he were in fact real.

 Danny Ainge saw this Spike Lee commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzd0ndj9DlU and thought he was a fictional character. Ainge started calling himself Lamar Mundane. He was bummed when he found out he was a real guy. One of my buddies played with him at Northeastern (Illinois University). He knows the actual guy who started yelling "LAY UP!!!" when Mundane would take a 30 footer.

He is real and I met him a few years ago. Never seen him play though. True story. Went to Phillips with his son. When the Reebok "Money Mundane" commercial came out we were in High School. He was like that is my father. None of us believed him. When I saw a picture of his father they had the same face. We were like damn you not lying.

He was known as a helluva shooter but when I talk to the older guys they say he wasn't as good as some of the other more renowned playground guys. Billy "The Kid" Harris and Arthur SIvels were considered better. Chicago playgrounds used to rock. There used to be some games in those summer leagues. It has dropped off tremendously about the last 10 or so. It was always good to see the playground legends lock up with NBA all stars.

 i remember the commercial, the stories around the playground about him were unreal. I heard he could either touch the top of the box on the board as an old guy (40's), down from being able to touch the top of the board in his prime. Damn I wish I had the balls to put up even an 12-15 footer and yell "lay up".

Now that I think on it, one of the local (Eckersall Park) legends was a girl who played at South Shore, was a state finalist in the 100M dash and who could be called upon to easily whip most dudes asses. She had a game like Dawn Staley, and iirc Tim Hardaway would play with her every so often. Pure talent.

I think Isiah's guy was a little dude from Hales, Sam Puckett. I'm pretty sure he wore 11 because it was Puckett's number.
