I see where you are coming from. It's somewhat similar for me though it has been for the past 10 months.

You aren't the only seeing this. And on a macro-level there is an island of plastic garbage bigger than the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean as a temple to mass consumerism.

I don't think anyone's complaining about modernized health care and/or modern building codes. The complaint is about kids who have 5,000 toys, 6 video games, 3 tablets, a miniature car, and a camel. There is study after study that show that this level of need for material things does not make us happier and in fact makes us sadder and more disconnected from our fellow human beings.
I think you are taking it to the extreme there though.

To me, consumerism is buying things you don't "need" but will enrich your life. For instance, one of the gifts I got my wife was an automatic apple peeler. Now, we can peel apples by hand but it kind of sucks when you are making a pie. So, I purchased that for her as a gift for Christmas. I don't think that is a big deal.

Well, no, I don't think anyone is saying it is. When people complain about the consumerism associated with Christmas, though, I don't think they're talking about a super rich Purdue grad buying his wife an apple peeler.
What are they talking about though? I'm open to hearing definitions that differ from my own.

Do we really think a large portion of society is spending thousands of dollars on their kids for Christmas?

MANY people are spending money they don't have on things their kids don't need.

Rogue jr just turned 7. This might be the last year before we institute the 1 want, 1 need, 1 wear and 1 read gift policy on him. He gets plenty during the year and doesn't need anything .

Well, most of that is plastic bags and then fishing nets. It's not filled with apple peelers.

It's always about your apple peeler. Funny thing is I think it might be one of the best examples of something that is not necessary. Unless you live in a Baker's Square.

Yes, that is why I brought it up.

It isn't necessary. I don't think it is wrong to own one though.

I must be contributing to the problem as my philosophy is that I say "no" so much throughout the year, that I don't feel bad going a little overboard at Christmas. Not Lexus-buying overboard, but I will buy a little more than I should.

I'm going to defer to the slave that screwed it together on that question.

I'll just make a donation to the Chinese Toys For Tots so he can have a Merry Christmas too.

My niece attends a public elementary school in the southwest burbs.

She says that the principal told them that they are not allowed to mention the word Christmas or wish anyone Merry Christmas.

I'm not saying you're lying, but I find that extremely hard to believe. Are you sure your niece didn't just misinterpret?

I don't know beyond what she told me - which was quite clear - but I can follow-up, as I know the Principal personally from back in my high school party days.

Well, if it's a public school, I'm pretty sure that would be illegal for him to say, but I'm no Constitution expert.

Attending my sons Xmas concert last week it was more than a little off-putting to see an entire Xmas program by 1st graders with literally no carols or songs I've ever heard of. Ridiculous.
