In this case, I am inclined to believe the intelligence community on the Russian hack. However, I still wonder if our government is pulling the same propaganda on us as the Russians and Chinese are doing to its citizens. The intelligence community completely whiffed on WMD's in Iraq. But more worrisome is they have proven to neglect American Constitutional values and international law (ironically in the name of protecting our way of life) by torturing suspects and holding them indefinitely without charge. When you fly suspects to countries where torture is legal, I have to wonder how much I can trust that arm of the American Government.
