So is his on-air persona more of a put-on than his off-air magnanimous behavior?

It's just, if that's who he really is--the affable, engaging guy with a good voice--why not just BE that on the air all the time, instead of having to live by this character every day on the mic?

Antagonizing the "stupid" listeners (and callers) is a routine which has grown tired with all but the most ardent Bernstein fans, shouldn't he be trending away from his current heading if he wants to retain mass appeal?

The only nationally-syndicated sports-talk comp I can think of for Bernstein and his style is Dan LeBatard, but not even LeBatard is as didactic in his shtick. LeBatard seems to be playing the straight man reacting to the absurdity of sports fans' worst takes, but only for the amusement of listeners, he's not really a contrarian pundit.

He made me a believer. He has good reasons for the things he says and the way he comports himself on air.

When asked directly by FavreFan if he was a Sox or Cub fan he gave a long convoluted answer that came down to him liking the Sox as a kid because the South side was "dangerous", but he could not hide his current contempt for and loathing of the White Sox since their shitty ratings cost him a bonus. bernstein and denisdman presided over a lovefest for Tom Ricketts wherein they declared him "The People's Billionaire". dan is now admittedly one of Chicago's leading Cub fans.

I've said this for years, you meet Dan and he's a nice guy, especially the second time when he knows you're not out to kill him in the parking lot. I see Dan maybe twice a year and he always remembers how many kids I have and my wife's occupation. Dan is really a prick on air at times but he really is a nice guy off the air and many times on the air.

In all seriousness, he was fine. I have to give the guy credit for walking up to talk to our rowdy crew.

Two things he said were hilarious, though... He said that his Cubs fandom is tied to his financial success and he told us all his kid friends were doctors and lawyerd and CEO's. It's like he was fucking parodying himself. He was very cordial, though.
