Chapman isn't an elite closer and I loved how aggressive Kenny was. Let's not forget that the WS train could have still been rolling but Uncle Jerry refused to take back Dontrelle Willis salary when Kenny had gotten Florida to agree to trade Cabrera.

Chapman is an elite closer.

90% save percentage, averaged 36 saves per season...and a couple of those seasons were on bad Reds teams. Career 0.992 WHIP. 3.68 K/BB. 0.5 HR/9 IP. Since being installed as a closer, he has a 1.84 ERA.

In save situations, for his career, he has a 1.81 ERA and a 0.939 WHIP. 4.06 K/BB, .489 OPS

Jansen in save situations?

2.10 ERA, 0.862 WHIP, 6.80 K/BB, .517 OPS

Davis:

1.14 ERA, 0.922 WHIP, 4.34 K/BB, .474 OPS

Britton:

1.33 ERA, 0.958 WHIP, 3.73 K/BB, .515 OPS

Melancon:

2.27 ERA, 0.980 WHIP, 5.79 K/BB, .555 OPS

Any and all of those guys are elite closers.

Davis looks even more solid. I'll take him for next season. Claiming Chapman isn't elite is just a troll job...although the roller coaster ride to get to those saves and wins was not always pleasant.

An elite closer doesn't need to start an inning to be successful. An elite closer can pitch multiple innings. An elite closer doesn't have issues when runners are on base. An elite closer can handle the pressure of the playoffs.

He blew nearly half his saves in the playoffs.

Righty reliever Koji Uehara is close to signing a one-year deal with the Cubs, Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald tweets. A report from Nikkan Sports in Japan indicates that Uehara and the Cubs have struck a deal for around $4.5MM.

There will be plenty of cash available if they want to go that route.

Next year Lackey's salary comes off the books as will Davis', Montero's and John Jay's. So that's roughly 48 million? And yes I know it's not as simple as "back of the envelope" math, but financially speaking, there should be funds there to do almost whatever Theo wants.

Now, all that being said, I don't think the front office wants to or will go 5 years with Jake.

I don't want Jake back after this year, let him hot the FA market and good luck..he's really labored to get to 5-6 innings and I think we milked him for everything he's got by the end of this season.

He's a lottery ticket.

This seems to be Theo's M.O. every year. Take a couple fliers on veteran arms to fill out the pen and see what comes of it during the 1st half of the season.

The thoracic outlet syndrome that has caused a pause in the career of free-agent right-hander Tyson Ross hasn’t curtailed interest from the Cubs.

The San Diego Padres non-tendered the talented Ross on Dec. 1. Although the Padres love Ross and his makeup, they felt releasing him was more prudent than paying him $10 million for 2017. That’s the salary Ross would have garnered through the arbitration system, regardless if he’s able to pitch.

Ross, who turns 30 in April, was at the top of his game in 2014 and 2015, over which he had a 3.00 ERA in 64 starts. Ross reached the 195-inning threshold each season and averaged 203 strikeouts.

“The Padres would never have non-tendered him if not for the $10 million commitment,” a top National League executive said. “The pitcher will get close to that amount with an incentive-based contract. That is my guess. You need to get a shot at two-year control if you can.”

The Cubs tried to trade for Ross in summer 2015 and again this fall before he was released, a source confirmed. Chicago was offering middle infielder Starlin Castro in late summer 2015. The Padres liked Castro but were more interested in Javier Baez, so the deal crumbled. Talks for Ross were ongoing again up until his release, the source said.

Ross earned $9.6 million last season — when he pitched just one game and had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome — and was headed to arbitration before he was nontendered by San Diego Dec. 2. The Cubs seem the most interested, but smaller-market teams such as Pittsburgh, Miami, and Arizona may be in the hunt, as well as Texas and Houston. Perhaps the Padres jump back in the hunt. Ross turns 30 in April, and some pitchers have had major problems following that surgery, including Daniel Bard, Chris Carpenter, and Josh Beckett.

Hollandsworth, an outfielder, played 11 years in the majors, parts of two seasons with the Cubs (2004 and '05) and he was on the 2003 Marlins team that beat the Cubs in the NLCS and then won the World Series.

“We are thrilled to have Todd join our Marlins broadcast booth this upcoming season,” Fox Sports Florida's Steve Tello said in a statement. “Todd returns to South Florida with a wealth of baseball expertise, and we believe his unique perspectives and experience in both television and radio will bring exciting color commentary to our Marlins telecasts.”

Hey this is Al from Peoria checking in but im writing from Kenosha. This move is very interesting, if you just think about it. In 2003 he played for Miami and then, came to Chicago. But now hes' working for Chicago and then he moves to Miami so its' like he is doing the opposite. I wonder if hes trying to send a message to Chicago fans with this move. I cant tell but it is very intersting
