Artemi Panarin isn’t going anywhere.
Panarin and the Blackhawks finalized a contract extension on Wednesday, according to a source. The contract details are unknown at this point. The deal is expected to be announced on Thursday morning.
Panarin, 25, has been one of the NHL’s most productive players since leaving the KHL and signing with the Blackhawks prior to the 2015-16 season. He won the Calder Trophy and tied for ninth in the league in points last season. He’s currently fifth in points this season. He has 45 goals, 69 assists, 114 points and has averaged 0.97 points in his first 117 career NHL regular-season games.
Re-signing Panarin has been a priority for Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman. The Blackhawks had to trade away some of their best young talent, including Brandon Saad, Teuvo Teravainen and Andrew Shaw, in recent years due to salary-cap constraints. Bowman made sure Panarin wasn’t the next in line.
“We’ve done it where we’ve signed guys in advance, during a season or the end of a season,” Bowman said in July. “We want to bring him back and keep him in Chicago. He had a great season [in 2015-16]. Love what he brings to the table. That’ll play itself out as we go along here.”
Panarin’s cap hit was $812,500 each of the past two seasons as part of his entry-level contract. He earned an additional $2.57 million in Schedule A and B performance bonuses last season. He is aligned to earn those same bonuses this season.
