I'm still about four pages behind in the Israel thread, but apparently Nas and Spaulding can't walk out the front door without being accosted by aggressive atheists. I've met like one atheist in my entire life who was militant about it. The only logical conclusion is that Nas and Spaulding are, respectively, full of shit.

And they also don't know militant Christians...

Yeah. That was bizarre.

I've never had a knock on the door and they are like "Do you believe in God, well YOU SHOULDN'T!"

I wonder if Spaulding hates militant atheists more than she hates anti anti vaxxers?

Well, I'll admit that I sit at the mall and throw eggs at people with cross necklaces.

In their defense, if you're gonna post out of your ass at least they picked the right thread.

That caught me a little off guard as well.

Hell, on the urban  radio stations you have DJs who are either clowns, former pimps, failed studio gangster rappers or television "Housewives" who ALL strongly profess their love of the Lord and all of whom take on air time to re-assert that only with daily public thanks to God do good things follow.

And yet they all fail to see their own glaring hypocrisies and assorted other shortcomings in providing good religious examples.

Spaulding and Nas seem to agree on a lot of things.

Did the 3 wise men ban hyperbole and everything said here is now 100% reliable?

The atheists I know want to talk about God and religion the most. It will come up at least once everytime I see them.

Really? You must have some odd friends. As a devout agnostic (Happy Seacrest?), that is the last thing I want to talk about with my religious friends/family.

Like others in this thread have said, that is very bizarre if true. I don't think I've ever met someone who talks about the same thing every time I see them.

I know plenty of atheists and agnostics, but I've never in my life met one who wanted to talk about it without being prompted first.

On the other hand, Christians can't seem to keep god's name out of their mouth. Muslims are just as bad. Jews don't do this at all. We feel no need to convert the world to our viewpoint. In fact, by rule, if you try to convert to Judaism the rabbi will meet with you 3 times and try and convince you not to do it. ONly after the 3 meetings will you be allowed to convert if you still want to go through with it.

How often is prayer, thanking God or going to church casually brought up by the religious? Aired on the news or in regular television programming? It's basically a nonstop barrage.

While what FavreFan says is consistent with my experience, I think I'd happily accept having every kind of fundamentalist knock on my door for the rest of my life if it meant never having to hear from Sam Harris or anyone who takes him seriously ever again.

yea, agnostics are the very last people who want to talk about god. That's kinda the point of being agnostic.

I think I qualify as an agnostic jew. I'm not saying there isn't a god, I just don't give a shit either way. I don't ask God for anything and I expect him to do the same for me. But, on the other hand, I am very respectful of the history, culture and traditions of my people and want to continue those with my own family.

In all honesty, I think the best advice for Spaulding may actually be to move. Her existence seems filled with the abnormal.

I posted this in that abortion Israel thread, but I might as well get to owing an apology in this thread too...

Even if these militant atheists exist, they're harmless.

Atheists/agnostics have to deal with institutional discrimination. You think atheists feel comfortable admitting their views at work? How about when running for office? (even local office)? What about the fact that at school graduations and other events, atheist kids and parents are basically shamed into bowing and partaking? I belong to a sportsman's club in which I am well-regarded, but if I told them I was an atheist, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I was banned. I had a very good older friend from Texas that I worked with for years. He asked me at dinner one night what I believed because he noticed I never mentioned my faith. I explained that my beliefs are those of an agnostic, and our relationship was never the same again (and we were very close before that).

I think Judaism is more like that in general. In my experience (because, you know, I have so many Jews around :) ), Judaism seems to be more about history and identity and less about dogma and practice. I like that about it.

Why does Sam Harris often you, but not fundamentalists?

Probably because I encounter more people who take him seriously but not religious whackos. I'd never pretend his influence is anywhere close to that of religious whackos or more nefarious but I have enough acquaintances who will laugh at the fundamentalists but somehow think Harris is a Renaissance Man with insightful things to say about whatever he's an expert in this week.

Actual conversation with the lady who was taking pictures of our newborn:

"What church do you go to?"
"We don't go to one"
"Ohhhhh"

Seems harmless enough but it was just enough subtle condescension to be noticeable. Luckily, here, that is isn't a very common occurrence but in many areas it would be. Luckily, I'm just like shakes where I just really don't care but I may have a different opinion if that was happening a lot.

I wonder how things would have gone if I had said "God isn't real so we don't go".
