Seeing these promos today on FOX pretty steady, and even if "m.i.c.k." isn't used in the context of the show as a pejorative or name of an Irish/Irish-American character (it does), I believe "m.i.c.k." to still be a derogatory term in popular usage.

Isn't that, like, really offensive? Aren't we told calling an NFL team the "Redskins" is offensive and shouldn't be done, even if the term isn't used pejoratively?

EDIT: bypassing language filters

It does. Kaitlin Olson is from It's Always Sunny, right?

She is playing the same damn character from It's always sunny. She creeps me out. Looks and acts like a meth addict. Give Charlie his own show.

100% Irish. Didn't even think about it.

I will be offended if she doesn't at least once say, "YOU CAN'T WIN, ROCK!"

I'm asking if calling a network television series by a derogatory term applied to a group of people simply for their shared heritage is offensive, and if not, why not?

I am asking if this was a serious post. Was it?

To me, there are a group of words that are pejorative and slurring per se--words that, despite the context of or intent behind their use, probably shouldn't be said at all because of the history of their usage. The N-word, obviously, tops this category (and it might be category all its own in this country, both because of the violence inextricably tied to it, as well as its modern re-appropriation), but there have been others added to it over the years, and I see that as a reasonable progression of our use of language and civility. I thought "M.i.c.k." belonged in this category, but who knows.

We may need to rethink a movie about a chocolate factory too.

Are you saying "M.i.c.k." isn't a slur?

Except for this board and the vestigial whims of bigfan, where one of the greatest Yankees of all time is The Nut, I really don't think anyone cares about this.

To the joy of Peoria, I can confirm that "chink" is not censored.

Oh, whoops, guess that makes more sense, huh.

Did I ever tell you guys my favorite story of being a Badger Badger? We did a 9/11 remembrance assembly but no one felt like wheeling out the chimes from the band room to the gym, so the ten-bell salute was done on a cowbell.
