He didn't get elected by promises to fight for the impoverished. That's not why he was elected.

A number of people that will probably never vote in another election helped get him elected.

So you are basically suggesting that he should have ignored the concerns of African American and impoverished people?

If I check his speeches I'm pretty sure that argument was made.

He ran partially on his "success" as a community organizer in an impoverished community. He was the guy who was going to fight for the little guy instead of big business. Maybe he meant it when he said it and maybe he didn't. The reality is he continued the Reagan/Clinton policy of screwing the poor in favor of the wealthy.

what, exactly, should he have done? The economy was in the worst recession in 80 years and you want to crack down on BIG BUSINESS (scary voice)

Hell, I don't know. I asked that question of the board elders one time. I don't recall the answer.

His election may go down as the biggest marketing achievement in history. That is not to say he was bad it is to say they took him made him larger than life. Berlin, Cairo, greek columns. I have never seen it before or since.

I just wanted him to provide a path out of generational poverty for MANY. Instead he cut programs that helped the poor and helped position MANY businesses to continue to offer wages that no one can live on. That wasn't change.

I'm not sure about that but I would say Trump definitely Trumped that. He ran on nothing but themes and slogans.

Obama showed the path but MANY don't want to follow it: family, education, hard work, character.

Yes! If the poor just pulled themselves up by their crumbling boot straps they would be fine. Poor people love generational poverty.

Yes Crack down on big business. Allow the market to correct itself as ardent capitalist always suggest that it will. It really isn't an accident that the stock market boomed shortly after he took office. It was directly related to Obama's continuation of too big to fail policies.

He promised that all Americans would benefit as a result and that obviously didn't happen. Even in the area of lending banks figured out quickly that it was much more beneficial to sit on the money than it was to lend.

keep waiting for magic solutions from the government. I'm sure the next democrat elected will solve all the problems.

It was perfectly fine for the financial sector to be bailed out by government. No objections there. All good whenever they provide a subsidy or much needed tax cut too. I get it.

No one was asking for a magical solution. Government had no problem helping big business. An education, jobs or a criminal justice reform bill could have been a start. Hell doing nothing would have been better than what he actually did.

If you truly believe that GM is the only business that benefited from government handouts then there is no need to continue this conversation. Happy New Year!

'Coming from me' ... I see ... a fine point for I am, of course, the board dullard.

Are you referring to the Bush admin's Bear Stearns and TARP bailouts? Blaming Obama for not cancelling that the minute he took office?

that's the frustrating part, you obviously are a pretty smart guy and can spend oodles of time making giffys or whatever they are called but MANY of your posts are just drive-by insults.

A little off topic here, but has anyone seen the PBS doc on Cabrini Green? I watched it the other night. This post reminded me of it because the residents seemed to have an internalized belief that government was responsible for housing them. That's not a criticism of the people, just an observation. Some of them were fourth generation in public housing. The show pointed out that the public housing was developed post-war and originally there were also many white people there. They managed to work themselves up and move out. Here's where it's important to read the famous Ta-Nehisi Coates piece, "The Case for Reparations".

I was also struck by how the grade school kids were savvy enough to know that most of them were never going to have a chance to return to the proposed mixed income housing and that this was a scheme to get favored developers fat. It was great seeing a couple of these kids put Dum-Dum Daley on the spot.

One of the worst things was these phony white "liberals" who bought condos at "market rate" (as if the rate isn't affected by the low income neighbors). The poor black people didn't get any seats on the association board.

Doesn't appear that it's out in the wild to watch, at least not at first glance. They show a portion of that segment on an older 'Chicago Tonight' episode (http://www.pbs.org/video/2365549533/). I think it would be inneresting to watch to be sure.

Obama's favorability ratings rose over the last year. IMO a large part of that was his calm, professional demeanor which contrasted so sharply with the craziness exhibited throughout the election cycle. Four years from now it is quite possible that will be his legacy rather than any political accomplishment.

1. First black POTUS - will always be seen in a positive light.
2. Obamacare - regardless on personal feelings, most policy items like this are looked at unfavorably in 20-30 years.
3. Killed Bin Laden - will always be seen in a positive light.
4. Expansion of executive power - regardless on personal feelings, most policy items like this are looked at unfavorably in 20-30 years.
5. Foreign Policy - regardless on personal feelings, most policy items like this are looked at unfavorably in 20-30 years.

As with pretty much all POTUS, most will look back an say what a horrible president he was as future social ills are pinned on his policies. However, he does have Osama and first black POTUS in his bag, which will always keep him in the upper echelon of POTUS rankings in the future.
