The article about the last show is on the trib site, but from that article - here's what he has and what the surgeries have been -

Boers did that and more during a quarter-century of a radio career that launched with the birth of WSCR, which marked its 25-year anniversary Monday. It became apparent last year that the station would lose one of its originals when Boers missed extended periods of time battling cancer in his jaw. In November, he announced he would retire.

Boers was in high spirits when discussing his health before the show Thursday, but he shared the toll that two surgeries — one in June and another in November — have taken on his body. Part of a fibula was used to replace bone in his left jaw, which is still swollen.

"I can't eat very well," Boers said. "I was on tube feeding for six weeks after the first surgery and five weeks after this surgery. ... I was down to 177 pounds (after the first surgery) and I started at 225."

That's a tough burden to be given.

Still, I think he looks pretty good under the circumstances. As I said, he certainly sounded much healthier and invigorated than he did a month ago. He drove that five hour show yesterday.

? He sat there and let the guests do most of the talking. No issues with that, but would hardly call it driving the show

He didn't look or sound good to me. It was pretty sad to see him like that. I get the impression that he is living on borrowed time, but I hope I'm wrong.

This trib article claims that Mitch still hasn't made up his mind on the replacement.

Operations director Mitch Rosen said he's looking at replacement talent "inside and outside" and expects to make an announcement within a month.

He directed the conversation, cut them off when it was time to break, was engage throughout, etc

You make it sound like a roast, where he sat quietly in a big easy chair with no other role than being a prop

He should ask the Bears for a recommendation on a consultant

B&B made fun of Santo and his disease. Did they do that with Ebert at all? I didn't hear it if so. At any rate...I wouldn't wish that [jaw cancer] on anyone. Watching the facebook cast yesterday and seeing his jaw...I pretty much figured what it was.

I had a bit of a jaw cancer scare a few years back. Ended up being an OKC tumor that ate away a decent portion of my jaw bone.

Ended up eating through a straw for about 14 weeks so the bone could grow back. Wasn't fun. But, at least it wasn't cancer.

Ah, so he was inflamed from surgery? I thought they usually just saw your jaw off like that nut who killed a federal judge 10 or 12 years ago. I had my money on the swelling due to targeted chemotherapy.

Is an OKC tumor passive aggressive and needy?

Ironically, there's like a 60% chance that it returns in 5 years.

That's not a joke.

Geez, I'm really sorry to hear about that, Dr. That sounds awful.

It was only a couple years ago--before shattering my collarbone, getting carved up by a chainsaw, and having a few other health issues--that I considered myself a relatively young person with a lot of years ahead of me.

Now I'm concerned that I may not make it another five years and I'm becoming increasingly burdened by thoughts of my mortality.

I have a lot of sympathy for Boers; I'm sure he was looking forward to a long, happy retirement--but that may not be in the cards for him.

Thanks, TM. I'm all good now. 3 years without a hint of it returning so I'm probably in the clear.

If anything, it got me serious about losing some weight (didn't have much choice) and I dropped about 40 pounds back to my swinging 20s weight again. Also, I created a tremendous KFC chicken, potatoes, biscuit and gravy milkshake at the time.

I have complete confidence in your ability to maintain and be around to confound and bore us for years to come, TM.

Having bone replacement in the jaw does not necessarily mean cancer. Last year I had jaw surgery to remove a large tumor from my jaw that I didn't even know I had. It turned out to be a dentigerous cyst that had left a gaping hole in my entire lower left jaw. Luckily, I healed nicely after many months but it can take 2 years for the bone to completely grow back. If he had part of the bone replaced, the situation certainly could have been more aggressive than mine. I lost a lot of weight too simply because I could not eat solid food for months. Everything was pureed.

That sounds like what I had, jay.

The doc made a point to say the recovery takes much longer than if somebody just broke your jaw because then they could just set it and let the bones grow back together.

This took much longer to be wired shut because the bone actually had to grow back in.

It was always fun to have people ask "Hey, lose a fight?". Very original.

Maybe I heard it wrong, but I thought Boers told Mike Downey yesterday he was looking forward to visiting him in LA this coming June for some get together of former Chicago writers. So at least he doesn't think the end is that close.
