I don't know why any show would screen out dumb callers. Dumb callers are funny.

The SW thing was decent. I would watch it. Didn't they used to reminisce about stuff like old boxing matches? They always had cigars too, right?

Ran into Jauss at O'Hare once. I do not know if I have ever seen a more disheveled traveler.

The Jauss/Gleason battles are what made that show. If one of those guys were off, the show wasn't even really worth listening to.

I liked Van Dyck but Boers didn't really even register to me at that time and that was when Telander was the cool, young dude. I'm old.

 Everytime I see Telander on TV,I think the same thing about I remember when he was the cool young guy & I'm old.

I like to remember him from that era and his work at SI.

They don't screen callers that way, despite the bored "knowing better" ... you know, "knowing better" like Trump voters, especially the 'appeal to ignorance' routine.

I didn't really ever see the TV show. I always listened on WGN. But Bentley was an old boxing guy if I recall and maybe Gleason so they did talk the sweet science pretty regularly.

Boers was always superserious on the old Sportswriters show. I always got the impression that he was trying to respect his elders.

I really noticed how funny he was, oddly enough on Chet's show. He was a frequent guest back then. They had a lot of funny segments back then.

That's a different kind of 'appeal to ignorance'.

I agree, Hatchetman. IMO that style of show is the radio equivalent of America's Funniest Home Videos or The Jerry Springer Show. I have no interest in seeing people get hit in the crotch over and over again or watching the dregs of society fight and argue, and also I don't have any interest in the radio version of it which is exactly what Dan going off on bad caller after bad caller is.

Yesterday denisdman said one of the things he enjoyed about the HFC was that they were genuine, and I thought that was an excellent point. Whether I agreed with them or not, at least Dan (McNeil) and Terry said what they actually felt and their opinions were their own. One of the things that makes shows like B&B and Mike & Mike so terrible to me is how contrived they are. Bernstein doesn't believe many of the things he says (not to mention his bullshit sources) just like Mike and Mike have "opinions" they don't believe for the sake of their phony "arguments."

I barely recognized Greenberg's voice over the phone.

Almost all of ESPN National Talk programming is this. They throw out a topic, and purposely have people take opposite sides regardless of their true feelings. Pardon the Interruption.

B&B didn't do it that way. Their approach was often to take the contrarian, almost anti-fan view, of a given issue just to rile people up. Terry didn't even have a legit opinion towards the end. Dan seemingly said stuff just to get a rise out of people. They did this with the Adam Dunn thing, where if you didn't understand a high OBP then you were an idiot. There wasn't even an argument to be had. That absolutist view of the sports landscape is what made the show a difficult listen towards the end. I never could tell if Danny believes the stuff he spews.

I also remember Swirsk on 890 AM or was it 1000 CFL? Good show. Even though Chet is asshat #1, his show was good. He certainly was from the Howard Cosell school of hype.

The sportswriters on radio also were great. I always liked Van Dyke.

Those were the days!

don't forget to make it your signature quote for the next year!

Joe Orr Road Rod wrote:

i've always said that dan's "rosebud" is that he's a lot more like skip bayless than he'd care to admit. the only difference is that dan does "reality radio" with his callers, who i've always said are there to be "gentrified" by bernstein... well except for the paid ones of course!

also skip's a hell of a lot more entertaining than dan. watching skip go on about one of "his teams" or just plain ol shitting on lebron is just genuinely fun, and now shannon sharpe is a way better foil for him than stephen A; dan's just kind of caught up in this "infotainment vortex" where i think he wants me to worship at the church of WAR or something else equally futile #SaveTheWin!

Yeah, as manifested in Bernstein's claim that only championships matter. One should not find joy in individual games or performances unless they got you closer to a title.

I remember listening to Swirskey on Sunday nights on WMET (Classic Rock station in late 70's/early 80's). His lead-in song was Fire on High by ELO & his tag-line was "The Bottom Line on Sports". (later adopted by Bruce Wolf/Chet Chit-Chat as The Lobotomy Line on sports).

There were MANY times I thought Dan was doing a bit about how much greater he thought Lebron James was simply to troll out the hometown Jordan people. If so, brilliant for him.
