I don't see how he wins.

He called himself the Best Job Creator God Ever Created.

He's writing the attack ads himself once his 4 years run of failure is done.

He was caught on tape bragging about how he grabs pussy as he pleases. Dems would need to find a candidate that is likeable and not a doc brown looking socialist.

They just need to nominate the Liberal Donald Trump in order to beat Trump. So... Sean Penn, I guess.

Donald Trump is the liberal Donald Trump - he's just replaced reading the NYT with Breitbart and infowars.

Sadly, I can see a path for him being re-elected. When he talked about Jobs he hammered all of the battleground states where his focus will be to funnel jobs that way. If he is able to funnel jobs that direction at the expense of democratic states, it may be hard to flip them back to Dem in the next election.

I look at it the other way: I can deal with Trump being a fool because I'm afraid of what Pence will be able to do by "speaking like an adult."

I completely get what your saying, but I don't get the impression that - while he and I might have a 'conflict of interest', so to speak - he doesn't carry remotely the same risk of having conflicts of interest as far as the United States is concerned as this orange atrocity sure seems to have, not to mention the possible intellectual liabilities on top of that. Basically it's like which arm do you want chopped off? Both outcomes suck, but one sucks a little less, but appreciably so.

Yeah, Trump certainly isn't a conservative. It makes one wonder why the cabinet is being filled with right-wing nutjobs. I suspect that maybe Trump himself didn't really know who to get and left it to Mike Pence, himself a right-wing nutjob.

I don't believe Trump is an ideologue (unless the ideology is his own ego) and I could see things going two ways. One, Trump sees the far right agenda of some of the guys he hired and says, "No, no, that's not what I want to do" or- and I think this is more likely- he just doesn't give a shit and allows Pence and the morons to carry out whatever they want while he just runs around basking in the cheers from unemployed steelworkers.

Joe Biden would be an awful President.

Let's wait four years and see if the bar for 'awful' has changed before assigning it to Joe.

Also, I'm not necessarily advocating their abilities - though I think they'd be fine ... certainly worlds better than this current dolt parade ... I just don't know offhand (or, honestly, at this very second really care) who is a worthwhile contender who can not only fuck with this guy while maintaining a message of decency and sound leadership all at once. Joe wouldn't have any problem giving Trump a look and then lighting him up in a wonderfully homespun manner, and Bernie would just bring in the Bernie vote.

It was just a reflexive response rather than some well thought out 'plan' is all.

Yeah, except his ego will eventually decide from time to time that he's going to do what he wants when he wants how he wants and he doesn't have to listen to others or explain shit to anyone because 'he won'. That mentality was already on display today. It's not going to wane with time ... probably only grow, if that's possible.

Has it really sunk in yet to anyone else that, at the President Elect's first press conference, he had to step aside for, what, 10 minutes, to let his attorney speak for him, and badly at that?

I find it more disturbing that he clearly didn't really want to be there at all. Clinton took a lot of heat for hiding from the press, but this guy is now president. I truly believe he thinks Twitter and going out to meet crowds of people chanting "LOCK HER UP!" are substitutes for news conferences.

More importantly that this is the staged performance his administration spent weeks putting together.

Well, the war on drugs has been one of the biggest failures of government in the history of this country on every level, so I don't know that it's as harmless a stance as you're implying.

Is a sitting president "automatically" the party nominee for the next election? Could there somehow be a different Republican candidate for President in 2020?

No see Lyndon Johnson 1968.

Johnson knew he was finished and walked away. He didn't "get primaried."

Ted Kennedy primaried Jimmy Carter, though.

Not automatically, but usually they are considered the figurehead for the party, and are generally encouraged to run. In some instances, a sitting leader may not "seek or accept the nomination" of their party for another term as your President. But even sitting Presidents can have opponents in the primary -- John Bricker ran against Eisenhower and Ted Kennedy ran against Carter.

Compared to maybe screwing 20-30 million people out of their health insurance, possible treasonous ties to foreign states, no end of potential opportunities for personal fiscal malfeasance and impropriety, not to mention seemingly zero control of what comes out of his gob at any given time, then sometimes denying he said it as little as a few minutes later?

Not really. If Trump came out and said weed is okay, Bill Maher would distribute more red hats than a St. Louis Cardinals equipment manager.

Very Dennis Miller-esque argument.

I may be misremembering things but I was trying to invoke Maher's example of the LGBT community needing to put aside their advocacy/principles during the election in order to focus on defeating Trump.

Shut up, FF. Automatically eliminating someone because they are pro war-on-drugs is approaching Trump supporter levels of intellectual depth.
