So I watched some CNN coverage when I got home from work. Wolf Blitzer asks some "expert" if what Trump is doing with his business is still a conflict of imterest and whether it's appropriate under the law. The expert starts speaking, and he has a heavy British accent.

So let me get this straight- your expert on U.S. Presidential protocal is a guy born in the U.K.? Of course the expert thinks Trump is completely in the wrong. Then they pan to Toobin who says that the conflict of interest law doesn't apply to the President.

What about being born in the UK prevents him from being someone you could talk to about US politics?

I saw the top ethics advisers for both Bush II and Obama on PBS last night and both guys were apoplectic about the obvious potential for conflict with Trump still owning his businesses. These guys seemed to be non-partisan ethicists who understood all the legal ramifications.

Of course, Trump has his lawyers who are going to issue favorable opinions on his behalf. We saw one of them yesterday. The real issue is that I think Trump is correct, the people who voted for him don't care. And that's what he's going to fall back on. "They knew I was a great businessman with a great company when they voted for me."

I think RR and some others here have been way over the top regarding the dangers of Trump, but when I saw Gingrich last night talking about how he thinks the press should be handled I started to think their fears have more basis than I had previously believed. Our systems are very fragile. A lot of dictators were elected at least somewhat democratically the first time. It may be funny when Trump shouts "FAKE NEWS!" at some dope from CNN, but when I hear a presidential adviser suggest that Trump should control who is part of the press pool it gives me pause and makes me think that maybe the people who are screaming "RESIST!" in the streets aren't so crazy after all.

That's what a lot of us have been saying for months now. The nature of the press should be adversarial, so negative coverage of Trump is not always indicative of bias but just the natural outcome of the function the press plays when covering politics and politicians. If you apply the fake news label to all coverage then you're playing right into the hands of a fatfuck like Ginrich who might be too dumb to realize that what he's advocating for is a lot closer to autocracy then the democracy he represented not too long ago while sitting in the fucking capitol building. If Trump wants the negative press to stop then he should grow the fuck up and stop bullshitting, but we all know that's not going to happen.

A couple of things. First, I doubt Gingrich is dumb. Secondly, Trump obviously is way over the top with his fake news thing and how he thinks he can or should shape everything that is said. As far as the press though and the people that think they are being unfavorable to Trump likely think they have cause to think that. They are viewing it from a point of the last 8 years where the press in general fawned all over Obama nearly at every turn. Couple that with the love of Hillary and they are predisposed to believe the press in general is anti Trump.

I think you might be right about Gingrich. It's hard to believe a guy with his credentials could be so ignorant, but we're about to have Attorney General Sessions so...

But let's take Trump out of the discussion for a minute and just talk about the media and its role. Gingrich was suggesting that what he called "the elite press" has an agenda all their own. And there is plenty of evidence to suggest that's the case. I don't believe the concept of an "adversarial press" means a press that is actively pushing a counter-agenda.

Some of the things Gingrich said last night led me to believe he thinks a president is a lot closer to a king than he is to a temporary hired civil servant.

Well, I didn't see it so I won't comment on that. All I am saying he is calculating and very smart. He is not dumb at all.

I can't help you here because how you view the conduct of the press over "the last 8 years" in my view says a lot about you more than it says about the press, which is fine. You're obviously entitled to feel the way you feel, but that's what it is - a feeling.

I think language like "over the past eight or four years" etc is fundamentally partisan in nature and doesn't lend itself to objective, or objective ish, discussion. I also think it's silly to divide history into four or eight year segments whereby you can reasonably state, whether within those four or eight years or shortly thereafter, that the policies of so and so were a disaster or the press was this or that or whatever. A lot of that is either unknowable or not easily knowable.

You need to read better or possible slower... While I certainly have my own dislike for Obama and Clinton my post was written about those that think the press are being unfavorable to Trump. Generally though I agree that a proper look at a President should be made several years afterward.

This really is a hugely overlooked point for me. It proved what many thought for a long time. The media in general lean left and actively favor if not work actively to help the left. Had either the leaks never happened or the DNC/media acted in this manner there would not be such a big deal now.

The leaks as far as I know provided insight into a civil war of sorts among Democrats. How does that relate to the right vs left divide?

I think people are conflating being unfavorable for the sake of being unfavorable with the general duty of being critical and factual. Trump has succeeded in convincing his fanboys that the press, in total, is against him for reasons that have nothing to do with truth and fairness. I don't dispute that there is bias against Trump, but at the same time he's brought that upon himself by his conduct, particularly by blatently lying. So it's a chicken and egg thing. More importantly, not every critical piece is a biased piece. That's a lie forwarded by Trump's team.

This is a fair statement. Trump did kind of do it to himself by being so fast and loose with the facts.

Specifically, any cooperation between CNN and more with Podesta, Wassermann-Schultz and Brazille was all I need to see. I am sure many were similarly convinced.

Wikileaks clearly showed the collusion between the press and the Clinton campaign.

Does the collusion extend to choosing the Breitbart owner to run your campaign or choosing Hannity to help select your Veep? How about having your former campaign sign a non disclosure even as he is theoretically supposed to provide objective analysis?
