Jorr, how many fucking businesses have you owned?

 A bunch. I was a business broker. We often bought ones we thought we could do well with ourselves. That kind of blew up when we took one of the companies public via a reverse merger.

I kid but if you weren't as you just explained I would say you had so many because you were, well, you know, bad at business.

 Many times I have been. I'm not generally hard-nosed, although I can be if I really believe in something. But here's a lesson I learned, in fact with the particular business I was talking about above. I put this thing together with the guy who would become the CEO. He's a guy I grew up with and he's a real motherfucker. He has a lot of the characteristics I lack. I figured we could really do well with him handling the dirty work. He's a tough businessman in a way that I'm really not.

But at some point I realized, if this is what it takes to be really successful, being a complete hard-driving asshole and working a million hours, and worst of all just constantly trying to steamroll people, I'm not interested. I'd rather be broke than be an asshole.

Going public via reverse merger is almost always a recipe for disaster. It sounds like a great idea, but the compliance requirement of being public are onerous. And those doing it that way are usually in over their heads.

Oh my God, just staying compliant is another complete business that has nothing at all to do with your actual business. But it's a way for snaky motherfuckers to make money with stock. My former father-in-law who was one of the partners in this thing had his own crew of douchebags that he brought in on any project. Hell, I guess I was one of them for awhile. There was this one dope with an MBA who was as useless as tits on a bull. We brought him in to handle the filings. He couldn't do shit. A couple other guys and I had to roll up our sleeves and figure that shit out.

I don't know how I missed this discussion, but working in a corporate office turns every fucking person into a toddler. I have an office, but I agree with JORR... just give me a goddamn computer and a chair (and a door for occasional private conversations). I often don't even work in my office - I find a cubicle among the dozens of unused cubicles on the empty side of our suite and work there so no one can find me. I also frequently get people who comment on how I dont have anything in my office like pictures or plants. I'm not sure why that bothers people so much or why they even care.

Thankfully, in February, I'm going back to managing a remote team that is split between three states, and I will likely never be in the office unless I have to.

As a small business owner, I look forward to this slow period each year. The upcoming holiday weekend comes right in the middle of a traditional business lull.

I went in early just to leave early and go home to make myself a good lunch and get into 4 day weekend mode. I'm in prosciutto and fontina with balsamic mode (and all kinds of other tastys) mode wirh cocktails sprawled on my couch now. Four days off to celebrate Dr. King. Works for me, and given my last bout with paying bills, I am turning up the heat at my house despite next month's People's Gas bill

so evidently disliking MLK can get you killed, but on the other hand literally being MLK can also get you killed... seems like a pretty "damned if you do / damned if you don't" situation to an outsider like me.

personally, i just enjoy the extra basketball games on during a day where i know i'm not gonna get any bills in the mail. oh and i liked the boondocks' MLK episode too, that was a nice take on two different eras.

His birthday being so close after a work vacation isn't the best timing.

Most people your age are. I've shared my views in the past about him being morally bankrupt and a fraud. I know MANY disagree and that's fine. That being said I like some things that he said but Malcolm had a more uplifting message. Creating industries and building up your own community is far more powerful than asking for a guaranteed wage (welfare) from the government. One creates independence and power and the other creates dependency and weakness. Not surprisingly the government promoted MLK's message of weakness and dependency.

Au Contraire. If you pay cash for Christmas and grinded to the 24th, it's perfect.
