A black guy fixing his molding....yeah,right!

This was a setup by an anti-law faction.

These guys should be fired for how they handled arresting someone accused of a nonviolent (technically?) crime. But I'm not going get down on them for rolling on a call from someone claiming they witnessed a car being stolen. They broke bad (and made this kid rich) when they didn't run the plates upon arrival at the scene and instead proceeded to tackle and beat him. No problem that they stopped him initially, though.

Not as serious (obviously) as the WaPo story but used to play ball a lot in Naperville as a high schooler. Everyday almost at the same elementary school in a McMansion neighborhood. Sometimes just four guys but occasionally more.

One time we set up a game between kids from Naperville and kids from Bolingbrook. We all went to the same HS so we were friends. Just a friendly competition for bragging rights. Most of the Bolingbrook players were black while the Naperville faction (who were regulars at the school court on which we played the game) were white, black and brown. Anyway with ten players on the court plus girlfriends, friends, etc the crowd swelled to probably about 20 people. So we're playing full court and everything is going fine. Like I said we're all friends so there are no fights or whatever. Anyway about 20 minutes into the game two cop cars pull up and start to approach us. The majority of my black friends reflexively started to run away to a nearby house owned by a friend who was playing with us. Among these people running away was my next door neighbor, a black Napervillian guy whose dad worked as an accountant at the McDonald's corporate office in Oak Brook. Everything happened so fast but I somehow noticed him in particular running away. I asked him why he was running since some of us, including me, stayed in place. He said, somewhat incredulously, "because I'm black." I was like 16 and living in Naperville so what he said didn't make sense to me until much later. At that time I thought of him as my next door neighbor friend who shared the same views on everything I did and had the same experiences growing up that I did - didn't make sense that he'd run away while I stayed in place. I also realized much later the reason the cops showed up at a friendly basketball game played in the middle of a generic McMansion neighborhood was probably because someone saw a bunch of black dudes and decided that they, and maybe the rest of us, didn't belong. Nothing happened afterwards but the social lessons of the encounter didn't hit me until later in life.

Aside from the tackling and beating--which nobody is arguing was justified--what would you like the police to do? Not roll on calls of grand theft auto in progress, just in case it's some busy-body misreading a situation? Or, when they encounter the vehicle on the road, trail it for a bit to run the plates to make....what kind of identification, exactly, without stopping the vehicle? This is all while hoping, mind you, that it is still a hoax, and not a thief that will freak out and floor it on public roads once he sees the fuzz in his rear view.

When I was living in Homewood and a cop had someone pulled over, it was 95% chance they were black. And Homewood is close to a 50/50 mix of whites and blacks.

This is real no doubt. I had a watch commander who was very racist and wanted to make sure anyone driving through town (or living in town, of course) that was black, was hassled as much as possible and arrested whenever possible. He wanted to discourage any blacks thinking about spending any time in town, to reconsider. It was never about picking on blacks just because we wanted to make their lives miserable. It was about making them feel unwelcome and causing them to stay out of our town. I have to believe this happens in many towns.

Had cops pull guns on me twice (shotgun first 9 mm the next time). Got a ticket for 6 mph over the speed limit once as a result. The other time the cop thought I stole my old pull out radio out of my own car.

Had cops incorrectly identify me as a defendant in cases where eyewitness testimony was the basis for the cases.

But at the same time I had a couple of friends murdered and no real investigation was ever done.

This is the worst haiku ever.

It's certainly not going to be tolerated in Evanston. Charging that guy like he was the Son of Sam is about the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

I will say there's something a little odd about the story. The guy had a dashcam he was trying to capture the incident on. And who the fuck does non-essential work on his car in the dark? It seems to me he may have set the cops up and they didn't disappoint.

Hey Boss, this is Watch Commander Al from Elgin. Please note I'm checking in from Moneka today. Thanks for retelling the story. Just following orders. Always viewed our time together as precious though I thought the beastiality was a bit much. You can only visit so many horse ranches to "check things out".

Anyway Go Cubs! I have to admit you called it: the winner of a game 7 in the world series tends to become the world champion. I knew you were always to big for the cop scene and that's why you retired to paint doorknobs and other fixtures. Your a real role model for all aspiring lowlifes and dimwits. Keep up the good work my friend.

Back in the day I used to get stopped all of the time because a guy with a similar but not same name had a warrant on him. The warrant was from Itasca. Once they even pulled me out of a motel room in Matteson for the dumb shit. I was staying overnight on one my rendezvous' with a chick I used to deal with and they came banging on the door. They'd run my plates in the parking lot (which they stated was standard procedure after 12 A.M) and obtained room info. I provided I.D. and they said it was probably fake. They later booked me on suspicion. Placed me in a holding cell while they processed my prints. Later released but it was really some bullshit.

I also have a DWB experience from Lombard too. At least in that situation I had bogus info though. They didn't have cause to trail me like they did but at least I knew that once they started running shit I'd be done.

Also, do you understand how NOT NORMAL it is in the USA to have a couple friends murdered? That really outside of Chicago there are very few places where that can be said so non nonchalantly. Maybe there's a reason police act that way in a community where that is the norm.

Chicago has one of the worst clearance rates in the country on homicides, it would seem to be common sense to hire more detectives and stop excluding people who have a criminal background. What are your thoughts on this?

One was an honor student home for Thanksgiving, the other was a regular kid, both of whom are missed and deserving of people to give a damn. Neither was deserving of some thieving asshole to belittle their unfortunate demises just because they were urban and urbane Black college kids in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And for the record you sniveling asshole, I know all kinds of "normal", especially from deluded self important criminal pseudo intellectual wannabes. Or their idols, shitty public servants.
