My mom used to say, "If you want to learn, you can learn anywhere."

Abe Lincoln learned in a log cabin. I even know a really rich guy who learned at Conant.

It's more difficult to learn when your only meals of the day are coming at school and you are taking your life in your hands during the walk to the building.

The first part is true, no question.

But I don't think anyone really feels they are taking their life in their hands when they attend their school or walk through their neighborhood. That's what they know. It would never occur to me to be wary on Howard Street, but it's obviously a high crime area and a dangerous place. But I was nervous as hell when we went to wrestle at Mt. Carmel. I bet Peeps finds that silly.

I bet kids are pretty aware of the dangers when they lose a classmate.

I don't know. Just this week Fenwick played at Simeon and I read an article about how suburban school almost never play in Public League gyms. (I don't really consider Fenwick "suburban", though it technically is.) Both Smith and Malnati were acting like it was a special thing. I know Nas went to Simeon. I'm curious to know if he felt it was dangerous to go to school each day.

Basically, this thread shows me why a problem I have seen most of my life is never solved. You run opinion on everything from living conditions to charters to common core to unions as solutions and causes. If you cannot get 20 dopes here to agree on the best solution to try you sure will not get 50 states to.

We all know that, where it has been implemented, "school choice" in the form of vouchers has been a redistribution of tax dollars from the public to religious entities.

Yeah, how would someone without school age children know about school? When would they ever get experience with school? Can you please tell me what school is like? I so wanted to go to school but I had to tend to the livestock!

I have kids both in public and private, so the rest of you should just sit back while I lay knowledge down on you.

So people without kids have knowledge but people with private school educations do not about these matters?

You were joking with your comment. And my comment was a joking reply to yours.

I don't know exactly what you are trying to say here.

We've all spent roughly the same time in school prior to college. I would say it is enough to form an opinion on it.

I attended Wendell Phillips High School. Fine institution by the way. There was definitely violence in the building and around the building. I attended Phillips at a time when public housing was still very much prevalent and when different projects were at "war" it could feel like the penetentiary. My senior year alone 7 of my classmates were murdered.

I know whole crews of guys that simply dropped out to avoid the mayhem. It didn't really matter if you were involved. What mattered is geography. Where you lived would place you square in the middle of the conflict.

I originally started out at Kenwood. After two years I asked my mother to transfer me to Phillips. It was my neighborhood school and I wasn't really cutting it at Kenwood. My Tap test scores were off the charts but I was missing a number of days and was really beginning to drift academically. I felt that if I didn't make a move I'd become one of the statistics.

I transferred out because most the guys I'd grown up with attended Phillips. Shortly after I transferred in they dropped out in order to become full time drug dealers. I stuck it out and in many respects it was the best decision that I'd ever made. Transferring to Phillips forced me to see the reality of the world that I'd grown up in. I was a little different from the guys because i had a mom that a full time job that paid her a middle class salary. I didn't have to get out there like they did. i often look back at that particular time because there was a lot of uncertainty for me. Didn't really know which way I'd go with it.

Well, private schools can kick out the "bad apples" and be selective to keep out certain kinds of people.

That still doesn't explain your "How do you know if you don't have kids?" thing. We all know about school. Well, maybe not leash.

I guess I have no way to know but you did ask a very similar question to me earlier that clearly wasn't a joke.

It's very scary when these hardcore Christian Reformed evangelicals get into important cabinet positions. She literally believes the advancement of private "Christian" reformed schools at the expense of public education is the "will of God". When people operate under this edict, there is no compromise.

Aren't charters usually non-religious? Maybe I am completely off base. You may be thinking of a voucher system where kids can use those for any type of private schools. I dunno anymore...maybe Leash can recommend a good bartending school for me.

By following these people in the news over the years I've found these types can often very easily find compromise when propositioned with large sums of money or sex with children.

I'm not sure, but outside of charter schools I know another agenda item of hers is doing whatever is best for private/religious based schools.

Maybe. There are nuts on both side of the aisle. I'll give you my right of center perspective:

It benefits no one to have failing public schools. It impacts property values. It means that kids will not be well educated, and our workforce needs many of the basic skills taught in school. It takes what would be productive members of society and turns them into either sub par producers or drains on the system.

The charter and voucher movement would have no legs if all public schools did a great job. Sure, many of us would still send kids to religious schools for personal reasons, but people would not have to do it for education purposes.

Very few areas need to send kids to religious schools for education purposes. When you account for the selection bias inherent in private schools they don't outperform public schools.

I may be a bit biased but I live in Minooka IL. We moved there, before kids, ten years ago, because of the rave reviews of the public school system and it has been as advertised. So I haven't seen first hand a really bad "failing" public school.

The thing I love is that the lefties are screaming about how she didn't go to a public school, therefore, she can't be qualified for this position (see the image posted in the original post). On the other hand, the right said, "Here's Ben Carson - he actually lived in public housing." And the left said, "NOBODY GIVES A RAT'S ASS THAT DOESN'T MATTER YOU BIGOT."

Can't have it both ways.

Ben Carson isn't qualified because outside of a doctor's office he's as dumb as rocks.
