Wouldn't it be funny if Toews were a pothead, but like, the most boring pothead imaginable?

"Uhhh, hyaww, I mean, uhh, I've really been into music lately, eh? Hyawww, you should, aww, check oat this band I've really been into. They're called the Dave Matthews Band, and they just...they get it."

Don't let Barry hear you, he thinks it is sad. I think it's a great thing for the player and fans.

I give zero fucks about what Obama has to say about hockey.

How the Canucks are in the wild card race with this garbage roster boggles the mind. The Jets are better at no less than 15 roster spots and they're going to draft top 5.

well the obvious thought would be that coaching matters? i mean, on a scale of 1 to 10 how much would you say that a quality HC matters in the NHL? i guess your bill belichecks or gregg popovichs would be a 10, and then on the other end of the spectrum vinny del negro.... well, doesn't he have fabulous hair? =P

Just turned on the game; miraculously, the hotel in St. Cloud has NHL Network, and they are showing the Canuck broadcast.

Skille with the Canuck now?

NHL coaching seems to have a low ceiling and a deep, deep, deeeeeeeep floor. The best coaches in the NHL -- Babcock, Quenneville, Sutter, and Julien -- will generally do the right thing most of the time and only fuck you over a little bit. Meanwhile, idiot coaches like Dallas Eakins, Adam Oates, or Wayne Gretzky can singlehandedly burn a team to the ground. This year, you have a handful of teams triumphing in spite of confirmed morons: the Jackets with Tortorella, the Habs with Therrien, the Ducks with Carlyle (the only team that still fights on a regular basis), and to a lesser extent Willie Desjardins here in Vancouver.

Honestly, if there were a coach in this league as next-level as Popovich or Belichick, he'd probably win the Cup every year. The closest ever was probably Al Arbour -- Bowman had All-Star teams everywhere he went, while the Islanders were built up from nothing -- and for four years in a row he did win the Cup every year.

Oh, as for coaching w/r/t the Jets, Paul Maurice I would say is about a 5/10. He got his start by getting hit in the eye with a puck while playing for Karmanos's junior team, and out of loyalty/guilt he hung around the organization and coached the Whalers/Hurricanes for a really long time despite usually missing the playoffs. (He was what Fred Hoiberg will probably turn out to be.) The Jets take penalties by the metric ton, which is about as clear an indictment of coaching as you can get. He's on the low end of the "yeah, well, he sure is an NHL coach, all right" tier, around lingering whatevers like Dave Tippett or Jacques Martin.

For all the freaking out over Quenneville's overreliance on guys who suck, they all do this, and almost everyone is worse about it.
