Some kind of series on a cable channel called Viceland. Stars a guy with obnoxious glasses and a beard, somewhat resembling a Sacha Baron Cohen character, named Jamali Maddix. In the first episode, he goes to a white supremacist home in rural Pennsylvania. The family is pretty harmless, the father is a straight shooter and open to discussion with Jamali. The mother is a real piece of work. She hopes for a genocide of Jews. The father basically is a Holocaust denier and believes Jews are the scum of the earth...doesn't seem to have a problem with blacks as much. But Jamali then goes to a Klan town, and watches a Swastika burning ceremony, and also talks to the head of the NSM (National Socialist Movement). They don't like to be called Nazis, don't like to be called white supremacists. They try to go by the guise of "white civil rights" (because those are so in danger).

The strength of Jamali's little documentary is exposing the reality of racism: it isn't just a bunch of people shouting the "n word", or white sheets. It's people who intellectualize their racist thoughts. I always think back to "American History X", probably the strongest movie about racism I've seen as far as how it seduces people. That's the scariest part.

It's well represented here. Jamali is somewhat accepted by the people surrounding him, who probably behind closed doors would love to kill him (he catches some recordings of one of them off handedly calling him a "sand n****r"), not knowing they're being recorded. But in front of his face, they are "open minded" and in the case of the father of the family he visits, downright kind and inviting.

The weakest part was inter-cutting with shots of Jamali doing some kind of stand up act where he's talking to a (seemingly staged) audience, recounting his journey into white nationalism. He's British, so it's hard sometimes to understand what he's saying. But he also just...isn't really that funny. He's better at exposing the people he speaks to, and seems polite in conversation. The best scenes were between him and the father. You almost wonder...seems like a good guy, why does he have to be such a hateful person? Even a neighbor who is religious and adopted 2 black children to raise, says he's "saddened" by the guy's beliefs. Not so much because of how ignorant they are, but because of how much conviction he has for them.

The "father " admits to having previously having had 2 kids with an Indian woman. Said that he was a different person then, but didn't seem to be much more than a deadbeat.

Sad! (But typical of the current group of scam artists running DC and 33 states)

it was great when Jamali actually had the guy stumped when he asked about those children of his growing up, knowing that they will be seen as inferior and useless by the NSM, and how that makes him feel. the guy had no answer, and admitted he had to think about that.

that's the problem. the guy doesn't account for the fact that those kids are going to be grown adults, and have to live in that racist world that he is help to build.

they call it "lighting", just like cross burning. it's not a good thing.

I loved the "and this is the supreme race" when the klan members were having problems erecting the swastika.
