wow they got vince for this.... he must have agreed to it (as opposed to doing his own XFL doc for the WWE network) so he can try to come off as more legitimate than just a wrasslin guy.

also bob costas is coming off like such a sanctimonious prick here.... who saw that coming? =P

I never regretted the death of the XFL more than the first 30 seconds of seeing this condescending asshole. He's already easily jumped Cheryl Miller on Reggie vs The Knicks for most annoying 30 for 30 interviewee.

XFL was epic fail from the start. He hate me is one of the few things about it I even remember. (Last name Smart and he actually played in the NFL a little while?). USFL was decent actual watchable football. I was a Boston Breakers fan just because I could be. Loved those helmets.

Agreed. It was beyond annoying. It was like he had something personal against it, like the XFL threatened his family or something. Smug prick vibe. Plus it's awfully easy to sit in front of a camera how ever many years later and say "see, I knew it would fail". Hot take, Bob.

The bummer, irrespective of the He Hate Me gimmick drawing attention, was that iirc this wasn't the game they were originally going to show, and the one the opted out of was apparently a pretty close a decently played game.

Does that change anything in the long run? Probably not. Still, it's worth pausing a moment to consider if they'd gotten a second or even third season if it'd catch on.

"Vince is an honest guy" was the best line of the documentary

WBF - Google it.

Bret Hart & HBK only got their chance when the crowd crapped all over Luger and he had no one else to turn to.

The Attitude Era only came about because Vince threw his hands up and admitted he had no clue how to compete with WCW and the nWo. Hell, if WCW was run somewhat competently it would've been the WWF that went out of business.

XFL, WWE Films, Roman Reigns etc...

Please don't tell me you're lumping in "No Holds Barred" into the failure category.

Tommy Maddox got a deal out of it too. I remember him more than anything else about this, and I watched the first game.

The XFL was out of business for years, and the NBC store in New York was still selling merch. Conan O'Brien would go down and check on it from time to time to see if any had sold, and it never did.

Enjoyed the doc quite a bit. And yeah, as has been said, Costas came off as a smarmy penis, but his schtick has long been awful, so fuck him.

They got Vince on because it was Ebersole's kid who made the documentary. So it was essentially going to be a loving tribute to a "noble experiment".

After watching it is pretty clear that Vince simply had no clue on how football is actually played. He made up a few rules, and expected the guys to be ready to play barely with any practice. He needed someone to help him understand game play and quality.

So does Roger Goodell.

I have this recorded and am looking forward to watching it this weekend.

Totally worth it.

Funny thing is when they covered the week 2 game with the blackout, I remember I was bartending when the game was going on, and people were actually still paying attention.

I wonder if Vince had gone after top college recruits and provided an option for non-qualifiers if it could have taken off. It really seemed rushed. He had an idea and contacts so it was launched with zero thought to the actual gameplay.

I remember the Rock launching it, but remember nothing from game play. Vince should have gone the MMA route instead. If that was on NBC it would have blown up sooner. And when those guys were ready to retire they would be perfect for WWE.

Some whacko has quite a bit of XFL content, including some full games, over on his YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/XFL101/videos

For some reason back then, I recorded a bunch XFL games on VHS and still have them somewhere. I'm a weird archivist like that.

Great 30 for 30. Didn't realize how little thought was put into the infrastructure, resulting in poorly played football (for the most part). XFL was a pioneer in letting personalities come out and how the game was shot. Costas was a smarmy little prick in it.
