I'm not sure why they didn't make this a stop on the pink line instead. That seems much closer. Damen and Lake seems just as far as Ashland and Lake.

Quote:
THERE IS A NEW L STOP OPENING UP NEAR THE UNITED CENTER

The Chicago Transit Authority announced Thursday they will be putting an L stop right by the United Center.

This is welcome news for pretty much anybody who lives within the Chicago limits as the public transit options for getting to/from Bulls and Blackhawks games were relegated just to buses.

Now, there will be a Green Line stop at Damen and Lake, less than two blocks north of the UC. Currently, the closest train stop to the United Center is nearly a mile away.

Now for the bad news: This new Green Line stop won't be operational until the middle of 2020, according to the projection. The construction won't even begin until late 2018.

The project will be paid for by tax increment financing (TIF) and will cost roughly $50 million.

"Today, we close the transit gap and provide local residents and businesses with the new station they have been asking for," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. "The new station at Damen and Lake will fill a longstanding need for better transit operations."

The trail from Winfield won't stop there anyway.

Like I said, the train from Winfield doesn't stop there.

And the article said, it's almost a mile to the UC from Ashland and Lake. It's only two blocks from Damen and Lake.

It's closer than Ashland/Lake by a few blocks.

They foresee greater growth in the area right at Damen/Lake with businesses and some revitalized housing north of the tracks, especially by Summer 2020.

Pink line would have been a little closer, but as I understand, Pink doesn't run as often.

That's not true. Look on a map. It's about 5 blocks from Damen & Lake.

Ashland & Lake is 7 blocks.

The stop should be a Pink Line stop at Monroe. That would only be about a block

It should be done just in time for when self driving cars makes public transportation obsolete.

Should have built it at Paulina/Madison, but hey, they tried.

I'm guessing the opening will coincide with the development of the parking lots.

yeah put me down with the people saying there should be a stop off of the pink line for this (with an easy transfer at ashland if there isn't one already) --- as it stands you figure cabs and ubers/lyfts would be hanging around the ashland green line for people who don't want "a taste of local flavor" when they go to a hawks game, and i'd say that moreso than walking from ashland west to the UC people are more "concerned" about walking south to madison from lake st, and that doesnt really change too much whether it's ashland, damen, or western.

What they should have done was have the stop at Lake and Wolcott, with Damen being the auxiliary exit. Or have an aux exit to Wolcott because you can see the front of the United Center clear as day from that intersection.

Hell, they market the Cermak Green Line stop as McCormick Place but you still have 3-4 blocks to go before you get there.

By the way, here's one person's rendition of the future stop.

Accuracy counts ... has anyone checked to see if the ratio of whites to non-whites is appropriately represented in that rendering?

Well, let's see, it's the Lake Street Green Line, but it's a stop for hockey games, so adjust for pi, carry the 1, should be 1:3?
