Agreed. Right up there with Geoff Blum.

Yep.

That Baez homer gets no love though comparatively . Its all Fowler and Ross. Baez Knocked Kluber out.

Marte has been the better outfielder.

That's what I wondered about on the previous page.

It's like their executives are afraid of present success. They always want to be a year or two away to keep expectations manageable.

They have a guy like Austin Meadows every two years too. The paranoia about McCutchen being a free agent two years from now is bizarre. Try to win some fucking games.

Two one-game playoff appearances in 30 years and Pittsburgh is looking to deal McCutchen so he doesn't hit free agency? If it's that bad MLB has some financial issues.

They are really in a class their own, even the Marlins extended Stanton and try to make the bold move occasionally.

I couldn't be a fan of that team. I mean at least with Ken Williams I know if the Sox need to be bold and make a move they have the courage to do it.

I don't know what to say about the Pirates. They have good attendance and local tv but not much else. I think they have their "plan" and they do not vary. They will. It get into the big free agent bidding wars and will get rid of guys before control runs out. They extended Cutch once and he is an example of sorry no more you are getting close to done. Let someone else pay him.

So three or four years of wildcard is enough unless they get lucky.

The Pirates are content to be good, but not necessarily win a WS. They practice the same approach as Oakland. the A's actually went for a couple years ago trading for Lester and Shark, and basically crippled their team for several years. Pirates do not want to repeat that, even if it means they don't win the WS.

It doesn't look like there will be any other players moved before spring training begins next week.

I gotta think that Q is the best starter available at the deadline and he fetches a hefty return in 4 months. I don't see him on the Sox in August.

There are probably fewer teams feeling like they have a legitimate chance to win their division this season, compared to past seasons. Boston looks like a runaway in the A.L. East. Cleveland should sail to the A.L. Central title. The Cubs are favored to win their division handily and the Dodgers and Giants will slug it out in the N.L. West with the loser a likely wild card entry. The Nationals and Mets should be the real contenders in the N.L. East with the runner up looking like it could be another wild card contender. My guess is that there are a few teams like the Yankees that might want to take a year or two to develop all the young players they have, rather than trading them away when the Red Sox are just so loaded that a guy like Quintana is not likely to tip the scales in their favor. Hahn should have dumped as many as he could and done a complete rebuild. This is just a half baked mess. The fans are not going to show this season anyway, so why not blow it up and do a rebuild full scale?

If they stopped today, they would have a top minor league pool in baseball and be poised to have a great pitching staff with a few top 100 position players, most of whom could be on the team opening day of 2018

The attraction of Quintana isn't just for 2017. I imagine the king's ransom that was offered for Sale will be there in July for Quintana. However, his presence, even for that long, places risk on the Sox.

The Sox have to play 162 games this season. They need to fill out a roster. Quintana is a guy who is fine to keep on the team because he will pitch fairly well and does not cost much. He also can be moved at the deadline for a good haul, or even earlier if/when a contender has a starter go on the DL. As long as Q stays healthy, its a win win for the White Sox.

If some of these young guys comes to real fruition as full year players in 2018 and you combine that with existing cost controlled pitching then there is a chance the modified rebuild can be a winner. In that scenario keeping Q would be good. Personally I would trade him but if they do not does not mean the Sale and Eaton "rebuild" trades were not smart. Particularly if Sale has arm issues soon or was a headache and he would leave as soon as he could anyway.

If they did not get the price they wanted, who cares if they deal Quintana yet? Seems like a good way to do business. This is the price, and we are not bluffing. Do people think Hahn was lying when he said he though he had a deal on Christmas Eve but it fell through?

I care only in as much as now the Sox are carrying the risk of his health/performance and his presence runs counter to the implied goal of intentional underperformance in 2017.

Yes, I like that he stared these other GMs down, especially the Astros. That got their nose in that good stuff. They will be back.

Watch this be the AntiQuintana year where he has an 10-2 record, but an ERA over 5 and a WHIP of near 2 by the All Star break

I guess there is always that risk, but I've never heard any concerns about his delivery. The Sox also seem to be good about keeping pitchers healthy. Price could go really high if he pitches well and other teams have injuries. Worst case scenario and he blows out his arm, at least his contract is cheap.

Of course they don't have to trade Quintana. They didn't have to trade Sale or Eaton either but they sure as fuck were highly motivated to do so. Not quite as motivated to move anyone else. #fakerebuild

Who else were they going to be able to move? Frazier and Abreu? This was the wrong off-season to be peddling power hitters on the wrong side of 30 with, at best, slightly above average on-base abilities. Melky? Again, power-hitting corner OF's were all over the place this off-season, and they could be had for pennies, not future assets. Maybe there's an injury in spring training that forces a team's hand, and there will certainly be suitors for a power bat rental at the deadline.

I'm still elated at the absolute haul they were able to rake in for Adam Eaton, that was a fleecing.

They could trade them if the ate some of the terrible money they handed out but they're not willing to do that because they're not really committed to a rebuild.

I don't know about that. Chris Carter and Mike Napoli (both players very similar offensively to Jose Abreu) signed one-year deals for peanuts, because there was no interest in them. Todd Frazier's offensive abilities are similar to those of Mark Trumbo, and he got less than $40 million for a 3-year deal, and Frazier can barely play a "meh" 3B, not corner OF. Who wouldn't sign players for peanuts rather than give up a middle of the road, or better, prospect?
