Thanks global warming! Clearly unextreme weather is caused by it.

It's natural progression. In twenty years the weather was bound to get better anyway.

Doesn't look like she has much fight left . Sure we could get hit with that late winter snowstorm like always but for all intents and purposes the worst is behind us .

We had no snow on the ground for all of January. If you remember, it all melted a few days after Christmas. And it looks like all of February will be without any snow on the ground.

That's amazing and I'm sure that's never happened in Chicago's history. No snow on the ground for all of Jan and Feb.

Works for me cause I have a trap ass car. I don't think it could've withstood any sort of turbulence weather related.

It was expected, its an El Nino year. Thankfully once Trump builds the wall we won't have to deal with these el ninos and la ninas.

Actually, I saw robins on a warm day in early January. Which means they never leave. How do those little bastards survive the winter. That always amazes me. You'd think on the first Zero degree day in the winter they would freeze to death. But they don't.

Where do they hide on those cold days and how do they eat when there is 10 inches of snow on the ground?

Some birds won't migrate if the weather doesn't force them to. They don't have to eat every day.

I get that. But how do they know if they're gonna be forced to migrate? They know the weather for the entire winter? There have been 0 degree days this winter? Why didn't they die?

No way this winter is over. I have lived in Northern IL since 1990. There has always been a kick in the nuts type snowfall event around my birthday Feb. 24th.

Nobody has given me a good answer. Fine, the robin has to go south when it's forced to do so. But once it hits 0 degrees for an extended period of time, isn't it too late? Tough to fly down south in that weather. That's a long way. And it's also cold in down state Illinois. That's a hell of a long way to be in the cold.

I'm just amazed by it. Humans die in cold weather. But a 3 ounce bird survives it? I don't get it. Good for them. It's an amazing thing to me.

If I had to guess, I'd day it doesn't take them long to get a few hours South. Remember, they can fly straight. Online, it says the presence of bird feeders has made more stay as well.

dude wtf is wrong with you?!? don't you realize that you've just jinxed us and now we're gonna have a proper blizzard with like 19" of snow on april 4th or something? thank you very much, you somniferous buttmonger!

seriously i remember that 2003 cubs opening day game [against my beloved expos] that got pushed back a day because of a near/blizzard that dumped enough snow to actually utilize that gap-day they put in the first 1-2 series of the season for occasions like this. after the postponement i remember going back the next day [~30 degrees] bundled up in 3 expos jerseys and a hoodie... and when i stopped in front of the wrigley marquee to adjust my layers of jerseys i saw a dad kneel down and put his arm around his son's shoulder while he pointed at me and said "[son], that's a canadian... he's from canada!" -- i matter of factly retorted "hey fuckface i'm from elk grove!"

suffice to say that i'm pretty darn sure that the guy didn't appreciate my obvious billy ripken reference there #StoryOfMyLife =/

btw, my billy ripken reference =

Some do migrate. But we don't see the ones who stay much because there are no worms in the grass for them to pull up. So they are out of sight usually.

The ten day puts us at warm temps into late Feb. We will get at least one or two more snow events before its all said and done but I will co-sign that winter, for all intents and purposes, is over. No long lingering sub zero temps or snow on the ground for weeks at time. Winter came hard at us in December and then it promptly pissed off.

Fine. A few hours. But in that flight it's still cold in down state illinois. So, my point is, once they figure out that they have to get out of dodge, how do they survive that long flight in 0 degree weather.

I'll never get a good answer. I'm just saying, the robin is an amazing animal. Humans die if they're out in the cold for a long time. But this 5 ounce bird doesn't.

Well the bird gained 2 ounces since your last post, so I am guessing a little extra weight helps him survive.
