I really shouldn't have to sell it. It just won the GG for best tv show, that puts it in some pretty good company. It's not a chick show, unless you consider any show where the lead character is female to be a chick show. If you enjoy the hottest genre in tv and film these days, historical docudramas, this is right up your alley. It's about the time in England when Queen Elizabeth took the throne. She was in her 20s at the time and it was a big shock when her dad died.
And John Lithgow is fantastic as an aging Winston Churchhill.
I watched it. I thought it was well done but ultimately leaves you with the feeling that the drama in castle is all about nothing. The government and country moves whether the Queen makes a decision or not. The nobility is just a bauble to let the English remember a time of historical significance and power that is quickly escaping.
All these decisions that she broods over, from who her sister marries to her uncles allowance, have close to zero impact on anyone but the show pretends that it has some important implications.
I think you missed the point. I found it very interesting to see the way the government treats the monarchy, they definitely don't act as if there is zero impact. Watching a guy like Churchill, one of the most powerful men in the world, cower and stare at his shoes while getting admonished by the 25 year old Queen was fascinating and contradicts what you said.
I think you are projecting your own feelings about the monarchy onto the people of England, watching the show I got the impression that they care very deeply for the monarchy and what it means and its traditions.
