The bigger question is if he is still a dominant home run hitter. It was a small sample size but his World Series performance wasn't that of a dominant home run hitter.

Perhaps. He also hadn't faced live MLB pitching in an actual game in 6-7 months ... surely that had a considerable effect on his performance.

Arizona Fall League does not equate to MLB pitching

no, he didn't suck. He was at least athletic. He looks like a hip replacement patient now.

I'm not sure he can hit consistently, but I'd bet on the side of it. He has a pretty natural swing. Pitchers will find his holes in a a full season and we'll see how he handles it.

As far as Soler, I think he could still be good. This year will tell me what I need to know...the bigger question with him is not whether he will produce but whether he will stay healthy.

You know what the best part is? Even if he's completely done forever right here and now, the Cubs have such an obscene amount of talent that it's close to a certainty they don't end up really missing him too badly going forward.

With that in mind, enjoy the rest of this dopey debate.

I thought I heard today on the Score he was in the crouching catching position.

I think he'll hit consistently. It's just a question of if he is a dominant home run hitter any more. His value goes way down as a guy who can't play the field and can't hit a lot of home runs.

It's February and you are already getting all thin skinned about the Cubs.

Next time just don't respond instead of a contribution like that.

That's rich coming from the Sox fan in a Cubs thread who spent 2016 trolling with nary an intelligent Cubs thought.

we have a different definition of athletic.

I don't know if he'll hit consistently, but if he does he's going to hit things far. I don't think that's debatable...

Looking forward to seeing Almora taking the reins in CF and becoming the next core player. Want to see Jimenez too. See how far off he looks to be.

Do you pitch or catch?

I pitched and played SS in high school and first year of college, then was strictly a pitcher the last 3 years. But couldn't throw anything but batting practice these days. Perfectly happy to play golf and watch the young Cubs and the up and coming prospects though. Maybe swim a bit back at the hotel. I did pitch in a 30 and over league last summer in Lombard, but the elbow and shoulder didn't like it, do I decided enough was enough.

The Wade Davis trade makes sense. Soler had no position available to him barring injuries. But Torres should not have been traded. Chapman was not worth that much. Just a 1 inning pitcher and a rental. When Maddon tried using him in an expanded role in the playoffs particularly, he struggled. Hard to root for him with his history too. Bad deal. They won the World Series as much in spite of him, as because of him.

This is bonkers. They didn't trade Torres because they thought Russell would be better than him long term ( maybe they do, who knows), they traded Torres because he was one of their most marketable prospects at the time when they needed to get Chapman.

If you're looking to judge the Cubs front office on self evaluation, the comparison is going to be Torres and the other prospects in the deal versus what was left of the top 10 in the farm system at the time, not Torres vs Russell.

If you are using "him" to refer to Maddon, I agree.

If you are using "him" to refer to Chapman, you're an idiot. Every single postseason game that Chapman appeared in for the Cubs, he got the win or the save.

Not quite, but your point still stands.

The Cubs won 11 playoff games to win the 2016 World Series. Chapman threw the last pitch for the Cubs in 7 of those wins, two games in which he didn't record the last out he got the win. 2 Wins, 4 saves.

Your point on Steve being an idiot stands also, without refinement.

I stand corrected. I heard somebody on the radio say that about Chapman not long after the WS was over. I don't remember who...maybe it was Jesse Rogers which is part of the problem as well.

The Cubs paid a steep price for Chapman but they had to, I'd have preferred Miller but the cubs don't win last year without Chapman ( unless they got Miller) Maddon was just too dumb to use him properly. I think McKinney is a bum bit I think Torres is going to be very good.

That may be a valid concern because of the knee but its insane to try and judge that by 12 at bats in any scenario. Much less when the guy hit .400 and crushed a double off the top of the wall off Corey Kluber

It would be like saying Ezekiel Elliot didnt look like a dominant running back in that quarter

I'm not sure a running back who started all 16 games is the best comparison to use.

Forget the name. 17 at bats is equal to about a quarter of football.

Anyway, Its gonna be tough to repeat, hope Kyle is great again!

Torres at any price was worth a WS Championship. They used Chapman like a rented mule as they should have. Let him go as they should have. Signed Wade Davis as they should have. It will all play out as it should. 2017. Rinse and repeat as needed. 2018.
