I had the same problem. I liked your names and just pulled a couple of my personal favorites. If I had to go with ten total:

10. Charlie - It's Always Sunny
9. Jack Bauer - 24
8. Boyd Crowder - Justified (This could have been Shane in the Shield, love Walter Goggins)
7. Tobias Funke - Arrested Development
6. Tommy Gavin - Rescue Me
5. Fox Mulder - X-Files
4. Tony Soprano - Sopranos
3. Vic Mackey - The Shield
2. Rust Cohle - True Detective
1. Robert Ford - Westworld (Probably some recency bias)

Yeah, Goggins is fucking awesome. It's the main reason I'm gonna check out SIX next

I guess Cersei from GoT would be pretty high on my list. I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Isn't Rockford some lame-ass Tom Sellick character from the 60s?

You're thinking of Perry King in Riptide.

If it's some ancient tv show you only picked for nostalgia reasons and not on merit I'm cool with that. Just wondering who/what it was.

The Rockford Files. Late '70s James Garner.

Tremendous character and show.

Would it hold up today?

Yes. It's great.

One of the first "hero" detectives to have flaws, money problems, still had a sweet car.

The only reason The Rockford Files does not hold up today is that a smartphone would have foiled many if not all episodes.

But as a complex character, Jim Rockford is fantastic.

Older sitcom characters have more trouble holding up because there is less time to develop the depth. So a Mary Richards is beloved and groundbreaking, but is like having Johnny Kerr go up against Kevin Durant.

Other 70s/80s era characters for consideration:
- If Nicholas Colasanto hadn't died, Coach from Cheers
- Hawkeye Pierce
- Edith Bunker (more depth and subtlety than Archie)
