Thats still too much, I'd set the over under on home runs given up by Shields this year @ 51.

Shields will be a tradeable asset by August.

The Padres already picked up half. I would think someone today would be happy to have him if the Sox picked up half of the remainder.

I'm not sure which is more outrageous, your Cubs or Sox thoughts.

It sounds like the Nationals are to dick tease once again.

Victor Robles and Juan Soto to start. Probably 2 more.

No way but I hope the Sox aren't shying away from sending some money the Nationals' way to make the offer better than an all glove, no hit catcher prospect.

Ah, I thought they were inquiring about Quintana. No way they get Robles or Soto for Robertson, and they can keep Wieters, too. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He's even an awful pitch-framer.

They are talking about some guy named Severino, who supposedly is a gold glove caliber defender who can't break .250 in the minors as a hitter. Still, even that is an upgrade over what they have had since AJ.

Just read a scouting report on him by BP...no thanks.

Quote:
His receiving still needs plenty of work as he’ll get sloppy with post-reception glove movement, but he has the hands to make it work with a little more refinement

A defense-first catcher who can't receive the ball well? He seems like one of those "athletic catcher" types that people tend to drool over, completely missing the point that the guy can't hit and can't receive pitches well, two of the biggest components of a productive catcher's game. So what he has a cannon? Stolen bases are down across the board, anyway.

With a normal owner I would agree because they would invest the money elsewhere. Not JR

Robertson is an expensive, average, 32 yr old closer. Severino would be a good get.

How can you say a guy who projects to a backup catcher is a good get? That is almost nothing. Why even make that trade? If Robertson stinks, you only lost on a backup catcher. If Robertson is good, you will get more. If Robertson is good AND the Nationals have trouble at the closer position, they will be giving up much more.

Sure moving him provides salary relief, but they aren't going to be strapped this year or next.

This negotiation is analogous to two cheap asses looking at each when the bill arrives after lunch.

Right now they're just above $90 million...for 15 active players. Yeesh.

Severino wouldn't be the only guy coming back. I'm sure there would be a couple low level guys included too. Catchers are hard to find and he would be a giant upgrade over what they've had the last few years.

Robertson isn't enough of a difference maker for teams to overpay for him and he's completely useless on a team that is going to win 70 games and every team know this. If Hahn was really smart he would have traded him first but we know why he didn't do that.

If Hahn was really smart, he would have signed Curtis Granderson to a 6 year deal, and claimed a bunch of other team's garbage.

I just think he still has good stuff and has a competitors attitude. Just seems like he has started losing focus while starting now. Give him one inning where he can stay locked in and dial it up, I think he could be pretty good in that role.

Yeah, plus he's a year older and will have to toss 200 plus innings in the AL, no Petco for 3-4 months this season and the division ( Dodgers, Giants) have massive parks.. I got him penciled in for 50 homers this year.

Price with arm trouble.

The Sox should split their team between the Nationals and Red Sox and not play this year

Generally a closer that is converted from starting is a younger guy who throws hard, but doesn't have the necessary assortment of pitches to go deep in ballgames. Guys who are older and have lost velocity rarely are looked at to close. Eckersley closed later in his career, but he still threw hard. I don't think Shields is a good candidate for that role.

Jim Bowden's new proposed Quintana trade:

Astros get: LHP Jose Quintana

White Sox get: OF Kyle Tucker and RHP David Paulino

Why it works …

… for the Astros: The Astros' payroll will approach a franchise record of $119 million this year. As legitimate World Series contenders, a team can’t get this close and not go for it. One more premium starter should put them over the top, and Quintana would be a perfect fit.

Quintana, 28, has been a model of consistency. He has made at least 32 starts in each of the past four seasons, reaching 200 or more innings every year with ERAs between 3.20 and 3.51. With the Astros having concerns about the health of their best starting pitchers, Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers Jr., it’s a no-brainer for them to make this deal, even at an exorbitant cost.

… for the White Sox: The White Sox get their long-term answer for left field in Tucker, who is 20 and was the Astros' first-round pick and the fifth player taken in the June 2015 draft. He profiles to being a 15-home-run, 30-stolen-base type in the major leagues when he arrives sometime around 2019.

Paulino, 23, is a 6-foot-7, 220-pound right-hander who was in the majors for a cup of coffee last year. He repeats his delivery, which is remarkable, considering his lengthy limbs. His fastball is mostly 92-95 mph with a good downward angle, which causes special tailing action because of his size. His curveball is inconsistent but overall has a high ceiling. The White Sox would prefer to get a third player, like they were able to do in the Adam Eaton trade, but for the Astros to give up two prospects of this magnitude should be enough to make this trade happen.
