To be retired on June 24th

Quote:
White Sox will retire pitcher Mark Buehrle’s jersey No. 56 in a ceremony June 24, the team announced Thursday.

The Sox are planning a special tribute to the left-hander before the Saturday game against the Athletics at Guaranteed Rate Field and will give all fans in attendance a commemorative pin.

Definitely a Sox HOF but not a baseball HOF.

The Sox probably have to two weirdest numbers retired of all baseball teams.

Nobody wears 56 or 72.

For all you kids out there, Carlton Fisk took 72 because it was the reverse of his 27 that he wore in Boston.

I have no idea why Buehrle took 56.

This looks bad.

He was a great player for the Sox but not to the point he should have his number retired.

A lot of franchises are doing this now where they retire anyone's number who had a good career with them and it needs to stop.

I wonder if they will place his statue next to the Harold Baines statue.

On the one hand, true ... otoh, I don't know that the White Sox have a particularly spectacular list of great pitchers beyond Chris Sale ... Billy Pierce? Ted Lyons? I'm not Dr. White Sox so I don't really know for certain.

Ed Walsh. Buehrle is one of the five best pitchers in White Sox history and the only one to win a World Series.

I like the guy, but retired Sox numbers and statues are just a reminder of what we don't have.

Of course we wouldn't be having this discussion if say, 2006 happened correctly. :(

Perfect Game
No Hitter
World Series Champ
5 All Star Games (including a start)

That is a lot of skins on the wall for any pitcher and to have done it all for the White Sox certainly makes his number retireable.

He always pissed me off with his professed desire to be with the Cardinals but other than that, he was a great Sox.

I don't think he ever professed such a desire. He simply made no bones about being a Cardinals fan and writers speculated. I liked that about him. He was a fan just like me. The Cardinals are his team. I'd find him untrustworthy if he abandoned them just because he was lucky enough to get a big league job.

Ed Walsh, yes.

So it's Lyons, Sale, Buehrle, Walsh, and Pierce as top five I guess, or some other order ... I don't know. Point is it's fine to retire his jersey given the context of historical White Sox pitching, but it does indirectly point to a less than awesome list of hurlers - which isn't me shitting on the White Sox, it's just how it is - which I guess was part of HGs point ... maybe.

I think they're probably about normal in terms of historical pitching talent in comparison to most teams. What they really lack is a normal amount of great outfielders.

You are wrong. I'll see if I can find anything but he voiced a desire to play for the Cardinals while the Sox were signing his checks on more than one occasion.

I don't think so. I urge you to find it. The most he may have said was something like, "Of course I'd like to pitch a season for my hometown team before I retire."

Well deserved and Buehrle should get serious HOF consideration (but he wont). First, he has a ton of great individual performances and plays. Tossed a perfect game, tossed a no hitter, faced the minimum three times in his career (twice more than anyone else), earned a win and save in the same World Series (first time it had been done since 1958), at one point held the MLB record for consecutive batters retired (broken by Jenks), has a highlight reel of defensive plays that is probably the greatest ever for a pitcher including one of the greatest defensive plays in MLB history.

40th in the post-expansion era in WAR. Top 10 steroid era in pitching wins. Ring. Hall of Famer start early (Buehrle made MLB debut at age 21), peak high (one of the best pitchers in baseball from 03-08 cumulatively) and last long (Buehrle de facto retired at age 36).

He spent his best years playing on the south side of Chicago and had very little velocity, also a bit of a hick. He will not get in for those reasons.

I hope it rains before the game and Buehrle comes out and does a tarp slide just to piss Kenny off.

He deserves to have his number retired.

The pages of my searches are clogged with the times he said it while playing for the teams that wrote his checks after the White Sox.

He was my all-time favorite player. I would almost always look at the schedule to see when he would likely start and that would determine which game in a series I would get tickets for.

When I read this earlier today under the headline of White Sox to retire #56 was a picture of him in a Blue Jay uniform
