Taxi companies are a scam business anyway. Fuck them.

Yea how dare they actually charge what it truly costs all things considered (there are a ton of hidden costs to taxi's that are passed on to the consumer that are no fault of the cab driver or company) rather than just tantalize you with unrealistically low rates and make up the difference with VC money. That sounds sustainable!

It's a scam business.

It's more about leasing cars than providing a service.

Worst case scenario? One time I punched in a passengers address and Google Maps tried sending me to Kansas City instead of Highland Park. It'd take more than a "few" minute to correct that problem.

You messed up if it was going to Kansas City. Do you think Google doesn't know the difference?

Optimal routes have nothing to do with anything else. If you could sit in a car that is much safer while reading or playing a game or safely eating and the downside is you may be offered a more inefficient route you can change I think everyone takes that.

These cars are all being designed with the driver choosing and setting the route.

Address was imported directly from an app. And do you think I didn't try to reenter the address? Wound up having to use a different street number to get it to work properly. Whatever, I may be a big dumb dumb human drive but I can problem solve that issue pretty easily. Self driving car wont be taught to question instructions.

Why won't they? If something is not adding up, they can be programed to clarify.

I've used google maps a lot and it has never been wrong by that large of a degree. I mean, errors can happen.

As for your last part, that is completely false. You get to choose your desired route in these cars. It shows you the whole thing. It's not like you say "Ok, car, take me to 11th and Main Street, I'm off to sleep" and then you waked up 24 hours later in Kansas City. You give the address, it shows it on the screen, you confirm, and you are off.

It will also display the time until destination along with the number of miles, and if we are talking about self driving cars that you summon by an app it will have the price and probably won't even allow you to set it to go on a drive more than half an hour without extra confirmation.

This is such a small concern that it isn't worth worrying about in the least given the advantages of self driving cars.

In that case Boston Market and Subway were scam companies as well. Franchisers making money on leasing and then foreclosing on equipment to franchisees is standard operating procedure.

This might be the only organization with more leaks than the Trump administration.

I wonder if it's possible for a rideshare driver to pull a bait & switch when it comes to the vehicle they're using. Obviously Uber/Lyft/etc. have certain standards the car must pass. But what if someone passed with vehicle A, then used shittier vehicle B to actually drive people in to avoid wear on a nicer car. Other than the passengers complaining about it, what would stop someone from doing that ?

America ?

The app tells the rider the car make and license plate number and that info comes from registration and insurance info the driver scans in to uber. I for one would not get into a car that didn't match what was on the app. So unless the driver was doing a bunch of pickups from the hadley school for the blind I am not sure how they would pull off that scam.

People really dont pay attention to license plates most of the time, or at least didn't when I was driving a year and a half ago. Occasionally someone would look, but 99% didn't.

The number of people who just get into whatever car parked on the side of the street that winds up not being their Uber (or better yet someone not affiliated at all with the company) also proves this point. Uber also wont deactivate you unless you cancel too many trips (heh heh heh) or do something truly heinous. Their turnover is pretty out of control.

I went to the boat a couple weeks ago and won a decent amount, so I gave my Uber driver a very nice tip. You'd have thought I put his kids through college, he was so ecstatic. They must not do very well.

I mostly use Lyft; a main reason being you can tip with the app.

I usually use Lyft when possible, but now I get $15 of Uber credit every month through one of my credit cards. Uber offered me $10 or 50% off rides this week in LA, so i ended up with two $18 rides completely free and $10 off another ride.

Took a cab on Saturday from Logan to our hotel near Fenway. I don't know maybe five miles. It was $47. Uber cost $18 For our ride back.

I ended up taking two cabs in Austin because I thought $104 was too much for a rental car for one day. From the airport to NW Austin and back, $115 total. Fuck me.

That's what happens when anti-free market big government assholes kick Uber out.

Cabbies deserve a "livable wage".

Cabbies deserve to make a little bit of money between their real jobs to pay for beer/weed, birthday parties for the kids, and hookers.

Half the Uber/Lyft drivers I've had drive for only 2-3 hours a day.

Similar experience for me there last year. Took a cab from the airport to the hotel. Short ride easily in the $40's. At which point I installed a transit app and we used the subway the rest of the time.

Ok so David Bonderman of TPG was on the board of Uber. Here's what happened:

"At an Uber staff meeting earlier in the day, Arianna Huffington, another Uber board member, said one woman on a board often leads to more women joining a board. Mr. Bonderman responded “that it’s much more likely to be more talking.”"

It is a joke about chatty women. I don't understand how that is sexist.

sex·ism (sĕk′sĭz′əm)
n.
1. Discrimination based on gender, especially discrimination against women.
2. The belief that one gender is superior to the other, especially that men are superior to women.

What he said has nothing to do with superiority or discrimination. We're at a point where people take offense at everything.

Sexist has a different definition and it fits pretty much exactly.

Mr. Bonderman is a tertiary Mad Men character, evidently. Damn broads, I tell ya.
