honestly, as a taxpayer I dont want our military looking like a bunch of mercenaries. my understanding is special forces are allowed beards because it fools facial recognition software, but I dont see how that helps frontline troops.

No. Never have been.

But as somebody who is a citizen and taxpayer I'm allowed to have opinions about how the military should be run. So are you. This isn't Burma, WTP control the military not the other way around.

What they look like and how it's run are completely different. Unless you can show me how the presence or absence of facial hair is relevant to a guy's (or for that matter, a gal's) willingness and ability to defend 'merica, why would anyone care?

This was the reason why in 1984, the Navy banned all beards once and for all. It did not go over well and many sailors were pissed. On my ship, the Captain ordered all beards shaved by 11:59 pm on December 31, 1983. He wanted his ship to be an example of the upcoming policy change. Of course, you had to be an E-4 or above to have a beard. And you had to submit a written request to grow one.

Uniformity is valued for a reason. May seem small, but it has psychological implications.

The haircuts don't need to be uniform, they just have to adhere to a certain grooming standard. Same with moustaches. I see no reason why beards should be any different.

Depending on your command, facial hair was subjective. I saw some beards well groomed and some that were Duck Dynasty worthy. Also, mustaches looked like Magnum PI to the short Clark Gable style. It all depended on how anal the Captain was in enforcing the rules.
