I think losing the Hawks-Wings rivalry is a net negative for both teams and the league. One of the things that makes me want to grab Wings fans by their throats with both hands and slam their heads on the floor until they die is when they talk about what a horrible burden it's been on the team to play in the Western Conference and how it's affected players' biorhythms and robbed the organization of TV revenue and done all these terrible things to them. Then you remind them that as a Western Conference team, they went to the Final six times in fifteen years and won four of them and they'll say "yeah, but we could have won even more!" So fuck them.

In a perfect world, the Blackhawks would have kept their divisional rivalries with not only the Red Wings but the Maple Leafs, another Original Six team in a cosmopolitan Great Lakes city. I have a feeling that with the Coyotes on the ropes again and no one available to take them but Quebec City, you could see Detroit sent back to the Central under a scheduling matrix that would see teams play once at home and once on the road against each non-divisional team with five or so games against divisional teams -- in effect, either four conferences or no conferences. The Wings agreed to this when it was first proposed in 2013, but it got shot down because someone didn't like reseeding for the third round or something.
