Its strange... usually when people argue hypotheticals, its about what will happen. We have the benefit of hindsight knowing exactly what DID happen and Steve is still being a complete idiot.

They won the World Series. Where exactly was Torres going to play on the big league team? The whole point of having a stacked team with a stacked farm system is to make trades like this. Remember the old days when we got to talk about Felix Pie being untouchable and then we got to see him actually suck in the bigs? The Cubs get to hype everyone and then move them before we realize they suck because all the good players are already here and proving they can play against MLB talent.

The ultimate goal is to build a dynasty. A team that has the ability to truly contend for the World Series year after year for a sustained period of time. Trading away outstanding young talent for a starting pitcher you might need (Like the Red Sox did, to get Sale) that will remain under club control is one thing. Trading one for a rental is another. Torres might have been a cornerstone for a decade here. The Plan should never be just to win one. Catching lightning in a bottle is for South Side idiots. The Atlanta Braves of the 90's and the Cardinals of the past couple decades. The Yankees during the whole Jeter/Williams/Posada era. The Red Sox of the past decade and a half. That should be the goal. Long term success, with multiple titles, built with young players from the minor leagues on up.

But trading away exceptional young players to get a rental just to try to win one is dumb. If a team has a core that is capable of a sustained run, to shrink the window, just to enhance the opportunity to win one single year, is stupid. Not interested in a one and done scenario. Looking for a nice long run of contending, with multiple titles.

I haven't seen this side of you until now and I must admit, I'm kind of turned on right now.

I'll be leaving for Arizona tomorrow and at the games on Saturday and Sunday, so I'll get to see both Sloan Park and Ho Ho Kam on this trip. Not going to the game on Thursday, as we are meeting with friends to play golf and then Whitewater rafting on the Salt River on Friday. We have a group of 60 going to the game on Saturday, with an after game dinner to follow. More golf Sunday before the A's game and again Monday golf early before flying back. Kind of wish I were going to see more than 2 games, but this time of year playing golf is more appealing that watching spring training games where the starters are gone halfway through the game. Looking forward to seeing Jimenez and Haap in person though.

The Cubs have agreed with star third baseman Kris Bryant on a record-setting pre-arbitration salary, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag reports. Fresh off of a year in which he won the National League’s Most Valuable Player award, Bryant will take home $1.05MM.

Chicago also shared some of its World Series wealth with righty Kyle Hendricks, who’ll earn a hefty $760,500, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Hendricks was another key performer for the Cubs, turning in an outstanding campaign that saw him land third in the N.L. Cy Young voting. Larger-than-usual salaries are also on tap for Addison Russell ($644K), Javier Baez ($609K), and Kyle Schwarber ($565,500), per Wittenmyer’s report.

I do not understand why people pay much attention to any stats or W/Ls during the preseason.

There is very little that can be determined for any of it.

Let's see what Heyward does when the real games start. If he is awful again there will be plenty of time to bitch about him then.

I would say in Heyward's case, an improvement in offensive stats would be noteworthy. A .087/.222/.261 line coming off his worst offensive season is something to pay attention to.

Every year there are guys that kill it in Spring Training that suck once the real games start and there are guys who suck in the preseason and who are lights out once the games start.

Against all odds, he somehow has worse spring stats then he did last year.

Spring Training stats are valuable and are different than W/L. The fact that he sucks is not good, and it's fair to look at.
