Chicago area is a little different. The 05 team started this starting 5:

Mokena
Joliet
Texas
Maywood
Chicago

Bench:
Florida
Texas
Springfield
Aurora
Texas

Now, I think the Chicago and Maywood ones are pretty easy to quantify as Chicago guys. I'm not sure if Joliet, Aurora and Mokena should be viewed the same way. Most of the time when people are talking about recruiting Chicago I don't think they are saying go get a guy from Mokena.

The 89 team is so far away from how college basketball is now it doesn't really matter.

I was wondering about Danny Manning as well but I honestly don't know if Illinois is a step up from Wake Forest anymore...
Money and some nicer facilities talk though.

There weren't bribes in 89?

Brown was supposed to be good but not national player of the year good.

He was Mr. Basketball, and either the best or the second best recruit in the state that year. Illinois has to get some talent from Chicago and the Burbs to be relevant. Can't live on guys from Peoria, Bloomington and Champaign.

It's like hiring Lovie. This guy has zero recruiting experience. That's by far the biggest aspect of coaching college ball these days.

If you look at it though, there were only two players on that team that were what most people consider to be Chicago recruiting and they've spent a ton of time chasing Chicago since with limited results.

That team played three guys from Texas too. I wouldn't say Texas is the key to future success either.

He ended up being the second best college player in that class and arguably because Carmelo was one and done he was better than all of them.

You think he was a better college player than Deron?

Yes.

They complimented each other. Dee's senior year they were bounced in the second round. They have not been further since. I suppose if you take into account Dee's extra year, it's a better overall career.

Dee won the awards. Deron was much better as a pro but that isn't relevant.

Deron's broken jaw set back his development. He didn't really start to show what he could do until the end of his last season and their Final Four run.

I wouldn't really say that. Maybe for their entire careers, but Williams really developed. I would call him the most important guy on the '05 team.

Dee Brown had an impressive list of awards in 2005.

Deron may be viewed as better because of his NBA success but at the time Dee was considered better.

I don't think he was considered better by people who followed the team while they were making their run to the championship game.

Dee was flashier. Popping the jersey - he was the face of the team and the emotional leader.

But, Dee's game was very limited. Deron was the glue of the team as evidenced by the Arizona game.

The voters of the numerous awards that Dee won over Deron disagreed.

Deron went on to a great NBA career that showed what type of a talent he was but in 2005 it was Dee Brown who was considered better.

Here is a fairly dumb and backwards look at one guy's opinion on who was better in 2005. http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illi ... etter.html

Seems like he liked Deron more than Dee then.

Archie Miller~ I'd offer him a 10 year 50 million dollar deal that would cost 100 million to buy out of when other teams come sniffing around.
