You have ZERO understanding of service time. The Cubs could have unilaterally renewed Bryant. He wasn't arb eligible. If all these guys play the way you hope they'll all be in line for big awards in '18 and '19. Document that.

You gotta admit Bob has a point, though.

 I know you know he doesn't. But I accept that your Cub fan identity politics are forcing you to support him.

It won't have that much impact for the single season. If Russell is one of the two or three best shortstops you can count on him get at least $12 million. If Schwarber really is a 40 homer guy God knows what he'll get.

But hey, I don't know, maybe the Hotel Zachary will have constant no vacancy and Nuveen will buy ads all over the place and the Cub payroll will go to $300 million a year. I would doubt that and that means somebody is not going to be on the team.

The speech was given by him at the end of his 26 year old season.

2017 is his 27 year old season. He sucked brutally last year but he's still on the right side of 30 for the next few seasons.

While it looks ugly now, burying the contract is a bit premature at this point.

Nevermind that everyone on the team says it calmed them down , got them to refocus after things fell apart but I guess you know what the effect was better than the guys who actually were there and played in the game .
Are we honestly to believe that a team that was the best team all season won the World Series because one of their worst players stood up and said some words?

It's a cool Hollywood type ending and it is a way to take some heat off a guy who was bad on the field but is a good guy with no downside to anyone besides Maddon who obviously had no control of his team since he needed this.

You're right . I guess I'll cede to your expertise on this .

You know coaches, and players, team captains and such never give "pep-talks" or "speeches" to their teams before games...or at half-time or after games. What's the point? It must be meaningless right? I'm sure it's always just X's & O's and strategy all the time. Speeches don't matter.
It may have had an impact of some sort. It isn't the reason they won.

You're neck deep in Cubs business here.

Yep. Without Heywards speech it goes down as per usual...Cubs super tight worrying about choking and tgen choke.

Thats the Heyward difference!

And for the record, if Hayward doesn't opt out I think the guy we end up losing down the line is Kyle Hendricks. Only because I'm already of the belief that you're not going to be able to keep both Bryant and Russell, especially with both being Boras clients.

Dolphin is a tough grader. Considers Lackey in Boston as a bad signing even though guy won the clinching game in the WS

Yes, it is but trading him and paying half the money is very real.

Not out of the realm of possibility that Cubs can afford an extra 12 million without affecting how they spend

I'd say MANY of his big free agents in Chicago have been pretty damn good... Lester and Zobrist alone could have been the pitching and offensive MVPs for the entire playoffs.

The timeout caused by the rain was a bigger impact than Heyward's speech.

It is Theos weak spot compared to the draft and trade wizadry.

That's like saying Jordan's weak spot was his shooting. All things considered, still pretty good.

Has the fact that all Theo's "cant miss prospects" that were mocked for years contributed in Game 7?

Ruth
Almora
Bryant
Rizzo
Baez

What a group of prospects!

I was gonna say Jordan's 3 pt shooting

(I love that his pyscho competitive nature made him believe he could beat Hodges in the contest.)

Dammit. I added him. Original post was 10th inning specific, but I changed it.

Baez was mocked as part of Theos coveted system though.

I think Ive pointed out that Baez is Hendrys guy like 15 times before on this board. Nobody knows that more than me!

Did you know that before "the Shrug" game, there were some saying Drexler was better than Jordan (ha!) because Drexler was a better shooter? Jordan knew that as well.

Jordan would bet 6 fugures on an arm wrestling match against Bull Hurley if you dared him

Sox fan or not, its pretty clear that the players won Game 7 despite the moves Maddon made.

Absolutely. Ill be the 1st guy to rip Maddon's Game 7 shit.

I just like how the Sox narrative has shifted regarding the Cubs.

Matt is never wrong.

The dad in "Get Out" is actually played by Maddon.
