2017 is his 27 year old season. He sucked brutally last year but he's still on the right side of 30 for the next few seasons.

While it looks ugly now, burying the contract is a bit premature at this point.

Agreed. I absolutely believe he can get bacl to his 340 obp with lile 17 Hrs

Pretty sad that we hope our $184m outfielder can get back to a whopping .340 OBP and 17 hr. It really is unfathomable...it's literally a $100 million dollar mistake.

Do you think that would work?
If you asked nicely I would respect it rather than the common theme of 'Sox fan in Cubs section. Get him!'

Thank you for the prompt response.

And I for one enjoy your Cub thoughts. Keep em coming, so to speak.

And for the record, if Hayward doesn't opt out I think the guy we end up losing down the line is Kyle Hendricks. Only because I'm already of the belief that you're not going to be able to keep both Bryant and Russell, especially with both being Boras clients.

I guess I should just disregard 2010, 11 and 12 of that contract because eventually in pitched well in a big game.

This isn't a Chapman situation discussed in other threads where the acquisition is for a few months while in contention for the sole purpose of playoff time where a World Series win justifies everything. He was with the Red Sox for five years and his overall body of work in Boston was bad.

Thanks! I needed that after leash, Don Tiny, and rpb treated me like that.

what I meant was

and Lester was up and down in year 1 of that contract

but take a look at Theo's big dollar free agent signings of the past decade and it will reveal a weakness. He even acknowledged that weakness on day 1 but it hasn't stopped him.

He was saved from big dollar mistakes with the Cubs when Tanaka and Sanchez chose to sign elsewhere

I'd say MANY of his big free agents in Chicago have been pretty damn good... Lester and Zobrist alone could have been the pitching and offensive MVPs for the entire playoffs.

There is a good chance Zobrist would not be on the team this year but for that contract.

Ben Zobrist was worth 4fWAR last year. Do you have anymore "Bad Baseball Thoughts"?

No matter what Ben does the rest of his baseball life,he literally made the dreams of millions of fans come true with his clutch performance in the postseason. His celebration of that clutch double in game 7 of the WS is forever burned in my brain.

Would the Cubs rather have Baez or Zobrist starting at 2B. Schwarber or Zobrist in LF. Bryant or Zobrist at 3B. Maybe you can make a case for RF but then the discussion returns to its starting point about big free agent contracts.

You know what's great?

The Cubs don't have to choose between one or the other in any of those situations. Great organizations build talented depth at all positions.

I apologize that the Cubs' bench players could start for 25 other franchises.

All of that depends on the matchup

Cubs could have a 6 man rotation. How bow dah?

Duane Underwood and Dylan Cease will be competing for starting roles in 2018 or 2019.

All is good, my friend.

Uh, the Cubs have two legitimate starting pitchers under contract for 2018, lets not start acting like they have a stockpile of SPs at their disposal.

For the #3 spot in the rotation. Unless there is another big money starter signed. Then again another free agent pitcher is certainly not building Talent in the starting rotation.

How bout dah

Ben Zobrist was worth 4fWAR last year. Do you have anymore "Bad Baseball Thoughts"?

Would the Cubs rather have Baez or Zobrist starting at 2B. Schwarber or Zobrist in LF. Bryant or Zobrist at 3B. Maybe you can make a case for RF but then the discussion returns to its starting point about big free agent contracts.

Good God, you're giving Tim Baffoe a run for his money. You're saying that the World Series MVP for the Chicago Cubs was a bad signing?

Sounds like you've deemed Baez and Schwarber great players based on a small sample. Sad to see dolphin walk back years of criticism over a half season (maybe less) of production from each player. I expected better.

I think we need a sub forum titled
"White Sox fans trolling the Cubs with bad baseball thoughts"

It's a four year contract.

You don't have to be great to be better than Zobrist. However, I am not saying that I agree with the Cub assessment. I am only verbalizing their assessment.

Sox fan or not, its pretty clear that the players won Game 7 despite the moves Maddon made.

True but he was never the can't miss guy. Any Theo type worth his salt will tell you managers matter little and post season is random.

I'd agree Maddon was billed like that for reg season

2017 is his 27 year old season. He sucked brutally last year but he's still on the right side of 30 for the next few seasons.

While it looks ugly now, burying the contract is a bit premature at this point.

Agreed. I absolutely believe he can get bacl to his 340 obp with lile 17 Hrs

Pretty sad that we hope our $184m outfielder can get back to a whopping .340 OBP and 17 hr. It really is unfathomable...it's literally a $100 million dollar mistake.

Teue but that's pretty much the player he was when they signed him. 360 obp ish

Big dollar free agent contracts are Theo Epstein's memento mori.

Lester has been pretty okay.

And for the record, if Hayward doesn't opt out I think the guy we end up losing down the line is Kyle Hendricks. Only because I'm already of the belief that you're not going to be able to keep both Bryant and Russell, especially with both being Boras clients.

Dolphin is a tough grader. Considers Lackey in Boston as a bad signing even though guy won the clinching game in the WS

I was kidding and have acknowledged FA as his weakness.

Lester and Zobrist were great signings though. If you heavily contribute to a title team, it's unquestionably a good signing
