Won't be Cuonzo Martin. He's going to Mizzou - $21M/7 years.

Would have assumed he would have preferred Illinois, which means Illinois did not prefer him.

I'm cool with that. I wasn't sold.

Weber and Painter hated playing each other and competing with each other. I'm guessing that had something to do with it too.

Finebaum saying he turned down an $18M offer from Illinois.

Why would he prefer Illinois? They are pretty much the same place in different conferences.

If Mizzou offers more money it is a no brainer.

Cuonzo is from ESL, and he had success at Missouri State. So maybe he was more comfortable/has better connections to high school coaches at Mizzou. Seems like Missouri has a fairly wide open path to be decent in the SEC. Kentucky is great. Florida is good. The rest is pretty much blah. Seems like the Big Ten is a tougher conference top to bottom.

One other thing to consider about the rumor, it's from Finebaum, who is a cheerleader for the SEC.

Now Washington has fired Lorenzo Romar, which means the number one overall recruit Michael Porter Jr., who is from St. Louis and moved to Washington could now be in play.

Kendall Gill says that Sam Mitchell really wants the Illini job. Also said Sam "has a couple of players in his pocket" already.

If that who was on with M&H this morning I heard that. He also went the whole need a legend like Deion Thomas on your bench to get that CPS recruit. Maybe it was the ass end of Krueger or maybe Self but didn't they get a bunch of Peoria kids for a while?

Looks like Mizzou got the first overall recruit by hiring Martin.

Cuonzo Martin will add Michael Porter Sr as an assistant, per sources. Michael Porter Jr did not sign an NLI.

I bet he's already calling the Illini class right now as well. Did anyone else see a report of Martin turning down Illinois or was it just Finebaum?

.
Many Peoria players donned the Orange and Blue prior to 1993, including Illini greats like Derek Holcombe (1979-81), Mark Smith (1978-81), Tony Wysinger (1984-87).

However, when Jerry Hester started his Illini career in 1993-94, it started a 20 year run of Peoria players representing the Fighting Illini – including Sergio McClain, Marcus Griffin, Frank Williams, Jerrance Howard, Brian Randle, Bill Cole, D.J. Richardson.

Now after three years without any Peoria representation on the roster, Peoria Manual's DaMonte Williams, son of Illini great Frank Williams, will suit up for Illinois next season.

I didn't write that, BTW.

From the Trib:

So where is Illinois in the process now?

The Illini are pursuing other high-profile candidates in Dayton's Archie Miller, Wichita State's Gregg Marshall and Virginia's Tony Bennett, according to sources. They also are considering UNC Wilmington coach Kevin Keatts as a backup option.

I don't see them being able to get Marshall or Bennett. Archie Miller would be a good hire, but he maybe waiting on bigger opportunities. Surely they wouldn't go with a "backup" option such as Keatts? If so they might as well have kept Groce.

The Board has been very specific about their expectations.

But what do YOU, the great Doc of our board and the husband of the bandit, think about Keatts? Surely that has to be a disappointing choice if they go that route

Don't get me wrong. He seems as good as anybody. The program is in shambles.

I don't even have "a guy" to back. Anybody willing to take this on has my support.

I like Keatts quite a bit. He looks like he could be the next big thing. Just doesn't quite have the record to prove that yet. A win tomorrow could change that, though. The other three are great coaches already. Probably difficult to pull them away to Illinois.

As I said earlier, I think the board told Whitman to hire minority candidates. Whitman said he wants to win, so the board said he could pay whatever was needed to fill both their desires.

Some think Keatts is headed to NC State

He is an NC State guy, but so is Archie. I think both would take that job if offered. Which leads me to believe Archie will get the job, because he is the more high profile guy right now.

You keep making posts suggesting the Illini job is like some mediocre gig. You've already suggested it's equivalent to the Missouri job which it certainly is not. What "bigger opportunity" do you think Miller is going to have? I guess he could try to get the Indiana job. But I can't think of any other bigger opportunity than Illinois that is going to be available.

I'd love to see Marshall from Wichita St come in. I grew up watching Tony Bennett at UWGB but he would bring in such a boring
brand of basketball. It's one step above Princeton. Slow ball and lots of hard nosed defense. Not too many recruits going to get
excited about that.

Bennett seems like a guy who is eventually headed to Wisconsin.

Miller could make the Illini job a three year springboard to an elite program. I don't think you can go to one of the elites from Dayton so he has to make SOME move. Why not a big state school with a good recruiting class at your fingertips?

Hot coaching candidate from mid-major school in Ohio... sounds familiar. You are probably right about Bennett and Wisconsin, that would be a
perfect fit there. His dad was the one that took the Badgers to the next level in the late 90s.

I don't think he will be able to now, it seems like he may have had that opportunity and didn't want it, that is how Greg Gard got the job. He isn't going anywhere unless they fall flat on their face, I don't see that happening.

Not completely sold on Gard after seeing the back end of the Badgers season.

I don't see Barry firing him for finishing 2nd in the conference and then almost winning the conference tournament. He has some big time recruiting classes coming in and if he can swing Joey Hauser to there, it would be huge.
