I realize my opinion on Dylan is both unpopular and likely wrong.  I just never got it. Not for me.

Critics. What does Robert Christgau do in bed, you know? Is he a toefucker? Man! Anal-retentive! The Consumer’s Guide to Rock? What a moron! A Consumer’s Guide to Rock, man! I object to the fucking liner notes! Starts studying rock and roll? I can't believe it! Baroque Rock: A Study by Robert Christgau. And Christgau is like an anal-retentive. Nice little box: B+. Can you imagine working for a fucking year and you get a B+ from some asshole in the Village Voice?

Are you kidding? You could argue that he invented rock and roll. And a lot of his lyrics are far more clever than Dylan's weird stream-of-consciousness rants. Does Dylan have a song better than "Johnny B. Goode"? Certainly not one more important.

Agree on invention of Rock n Roll, I could name 30 Dylan songs with better lyrics..Chuck Berry is known for the electric guitar and RnB blending for Rock n Roll .not his lyrics..I don't give a shit what some critic said. I understand that not everybody like Dylan's voice but he's the MJ of lyrics, I happen to be a huge Dylan fan n like his unique voice.

This but Dylan was really smart.

I know JORR is, let's say a rock-and-roll minimalist, but "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and "Like a Rolling Stone" are both every bit as much a landmark in rock as "Johnny B. Goode."

I like Chuck, his contributions to music are immense, I just don't like him as much as Dylan, Johnny Cash and 60 other guys.

JORR recognizes that "nevermind the bollocks" is the greatest punk album of all time. that's inarguable.

i don't agree; those songs are a part of a movement that had already started. there was nothing like "johnny b. goode" when berry unleashed it.

I'm a huge fan of Dylan so in no way was I disparaging him. I was simply taking issue with 312player's contention that Berry was some trifle as a songwriter/lyricist.

If I had to pick the most important Dylan song, I'd go with "The Times They Are A-Changin'" or "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)". In fact, "Subterranean Homesick Blues" owes a whole lot to Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business".

In comparison to Dylan's sprawling body of work, Berry comes off as a one-trick pony. But it was one hell of a motherfuckin' trick.

Particularly considering he was the first RnR singer/songwriter.

Not suggesting this is a harbinger of things to come...awesome B&G thread. Musical debate, WWF talk and Penn State blather 'all in one' (said in the tone of the ghey commercials they used to have late night on the U).

Don't tell anyone, but Brian Wilson lifted the tune 'Sweet Little Sixteen' and wrote new lyrics over it ... that song was "Surfin' USA".

Dan was positively giddy at the convictions of Spanier et al, but he kept saying these were FELONY convictions. Everything I've read say they were misdemeanors.

Regardless of his talent I have to say I am surprised regular reader has not yet show up here. After all he would say it was Reagan's fault Berry was a criminal and not appropriately loved.
