i felt like it took itself too seriously. it was missing the camp factor that made the first one so endearing.

Yeah. Apparently as much of or more than the whole earth based on the neato coffee cups drifting upwards gently in near zero gravity.
Judd Hirsch was embarrassing. Then ending with the kids.... um. Why don't you have a seat over there..+

So this was basically the same. Surprised you didn't enjoy it just off that.

It was, just updated for 2016. It was too forced. How does a Stripper become a Doctor in 20yrs? Fucking ridiculous.

I imagine the whole family was pretty rich given his hero status.

i saw it yesterday.

it is definitely an overstuffed mess, but there are some bright points in it and a few scenes that'll make you smile if you liked the original.

it'll also make you miss the original. for a derivative sci-fi yarn, ID4 was a lot of fun albeit predictable and cornball at times.

this time, there are too many characters and not many of them are all that interesting or likable.

also, the story itself gets so bogged down with laser blasts and big special effects, it distracts you from seeing how stupid these aliens are. starting with a promising premise of a gigantic mothership crashing down on earth and wrecking a good chunk of it, it starts to reveal itself as kind of dumb in that...why would these aliens who resemble an ant colony actually risk sending one of their queens down to a planet that they're just going to annihilate anyway?

but like the first one, we don't need the film to be smart; we just need it to be fun. for a good hour, it is pretty fun. but it weighs itself down too much and dances around too many things. if the first one resembles a tyson uppercut, this one is floyd mayweather.

i'd recommend it to those who enjoyed the first one enough that they have to see the story continue. but get ready to be a little 'underwhelmed' yourself, just like the box office was this weekend.

:D :D out of :D :D :D :D

reposting. no one's saying you can't like it, brick. but it's really not worth defending.

I don't really care about defending it. I just don't really understand how you could really like the first movie and not at least say "That wasn't bad". It's pretty much the same movie.

I loved jaws. I pretend the sequels do not exist.
Would you also be surprised that one loves the Blues Brothers but not blues brothers 2000?

So what are the things you didn't like?

The first movie was cheesy and laughable with how dumb the aliens were and with some pretty lame dialogue.

I mean your point about gravity was valid but the original has a huge amount of similar things.

It was set in this time frame with super dooper fyooter stuff. Yeah, I guess we reverse engineered some of their tech... but why didn't we have all that super dooper fyooter stuff from the first reverse engineered craft in the first movie?
The characters were like cardboard cutout silhouettes of real people. No one was remotely developed and it was hard to really care about any of them as a result. The hive queen plot line was silly. Drilling to the core of the earth was silly. Timing drilling to the core of the earth within 2 minutes of accuracy is remarkably silly. How would they know how close they were? How would they know what depth they needed to be at? Why didn't the aliens blow up the ship monitoring them? The scenes inside the ship were laughable. What was with the weird gay tension between Data and his sweater knitting pal? What did the artificial intelligence really do to advance the plot? Oh and not to mention a weird Godzilla sized alien chasing a bus around the salt flats?
This whole movie was ridiculous. I mean they had 20 years to figure out a compelling plot and characters and failed.
The effects was all this movie had. Other than that... nothing.
This movie was panned for a reason.

Nah - they had a production budget of 165M and grossed 389M globally. Other factors are obviously at play (marketing costs, etc.) but I'm sure they're happy despite being panned by the critics.

No way they are "happy". Is the 3rd one on hold, or are they moving forward with it as planned?

Studios will keep pushing blockbuster movies so as long as they can make some handsome coin - what was the last summer blockbuster that was critically acclaimed anyway? We're a nation that keeps consuming shitty Transformer movies and saw five Rocky flicks. I mean shit there are three Taken movies, where the plot is spoiled through the title itself, so why not a third ID flick?

Completely agree with your point, but trust me the marketing added a big chunk to this budget.

The last summer blockbuster to receive major critical acclaim was Mad Max. Can't think of anything from 2016 tho.

Rick would make a terrific alien for ID3.

I wanted to make fun of people who didn't like it, but Rick made them look sympathetic.

Fair enough. I guess I went in with low expectations even though I loved the first one. The first one was pretty ridiculous too.

I saw this in theatres. My gut reaction was that it was ID4 Xeroxed with a pinch of Aliens (the queen) on the scanner glass, and then run through the lets add foreigners to the film to sell tickets in Red China. It missed the mark on tone, personality, plot and effects versus writing.

It's is garbage. I stand by my initial assessment.

Every stripper with whom I have ever had a conversation is in college.

My wife had a lab partner in her engineering classes who was a stripper at Big Al's. We were never introduced.
