There is absolutely no way you can guarantee that, nor can you make the assumption that it isn't "too much to ask" for a man to wear a jacket. Airline tickets cost too much (on average) to also have a soft requirement for a business casual dress code.

Wearing a sport coat is insanity? You can see how standards have slipped. I'm sure the guy wearing flip flops thinks shoes are insane.

Wearing a sport coat is overkill. I think I just don't care enough about how other people act. The clipping the nails thing is gross as shit. As long as whatever is being done is hygenic, I don't care how other people dress.

If airlines want to institute standards for all passengers, they need to give a little back...more leg room standard, for one.

As far as the original article in the post, I have no issue for standards for people flying on airline employee passes and whatnot. For all intents and purposes, they are representative of the airline. Time to own looking the part. I wouldn't show up to a business meeting wearing cargo shorts, gym shoes, and a hoodie.

I just like the mental image of JORR, in a sport coat and slacks, sandwiched miserably between two obese, putrid, sweatpants and t-shirt clad Americans who spend the whole flight talking to each other and eating. In fact, the whole plane is that. He's on some flight to Dallas and unbeknownst to him it just happens to be the connector for a bunch of people's trip to some trashy all inclusive resort in Mexico.

JORR is right, but his argument relies on a level of collective action that will never be achieved. Americans just want to be pieces of shit everywhere they go and if somebody dares call them out on it they'll raise an apocalyptic fuss.

It's a valid argument, because I also have the choice to not eat at those restaurants. It's also an entirely different industry and out of scope for this discussion.

Part of the reason I am NOT wearing a jacket or a nice shirt on a plane is because people are so dirty. I am sitting in a germ infested tube for however many hours. I am not wearing 'nice' clothes for that. The last 3 flights I have taken I have worn an older Tshirt that I throw away as soon as I have arrived at my hotel.

I will preface this with two facts:
- I am fat. 3XL.
- I probably fly more than anybody here other than C. Howitt Fealz. 34 flights already in 2017.

1. I don't own a sport coat, because guys who are a 3XL should not draw attention to the shift in color at the fattest part of their sorry body. I own suits.
2. I rarely wear a suit jacket onto a flight. Learn to fold your fucking suit jacket properly and put it in your 22" roller carryon. All wearing a suit jacket in a humid airport will do is make you sweat more and be a fucking mess when you take it off and sit next to somebody for four hours.
3. Go to REI and invest in a couple of good pairs of socks. They have socks which look fine with a suit but which are very good at odor management. And for God's sake, do not take your shoes off on the damned airplane.
4. The Caller Bobs who got kicked off the plane should have known better. "Non rev" dress standard is essentially that if you can't wear it to work at corporate HQ or on a corporate sales call, you can't wear it on the fucking plane.
5. Paradoxically, one of the reasons I fly more is because it makes things more comfortable. I get to sit in places which won't offend as many other customers, I can book the exit row at ticketing and then get upgraded about 75% of the time. Trust me, i get embarrassed when somebody sits next to me in coach. I try and minimize how much that happens through free upgrades, and when the price is right I buy up to first class.
6. If you are a fat guy who doesn't fly a lot, fly Southwest. Sit in row 17 or 18 on the aisle. I learned from experience flying them about 300 times from 2007-2013 that those are the seats with the lowest likelihood of somebody taking the middle seat. Many times the plane only had 1-3 empty seats, and inevitably one was next to my fat ass.

Its not that I take it to the extreme as a germophobe. They are just shirts that I will not wear anymore. I have no idea how I have acquired so many White Sox Tshirts, but I must have a dozen of them. So its easier to wear it once and just get rid of it. I did the same thing camping last year.

I'll never take my shoes off on a plane due to practicality. If there is a crash or an incident and you need to deplane quickly, its going to be lot easier to climb over debris with your shoes still on.

When I travel for work, I dress nicely, but even if I have a sport coat, I'm not bringing it with on the flight. It's one more thing to store when you get hot and take it off. Usually, I have a hanger and holder for my jackets that they will store in the front of the plane.

If I'm travelling but not for work, it's probably similar attire but jeans instead of dress pants. Still no sport coat, of course. I generally don't start clipping my toe nails until we are at cruising altitude.

Sometimes I have to take my fucking shoes off I can't stand it any longer. After 12-14 hours my fucking feet feel like jungle rot is setting in. One time I took my shoe off and placed it down right into a carpet full of cold coffee.
