There used to be a Kappy's in Villa Park on Roosevelt. It sucked, and it closed about 10 years ago.

I don't know if they're all related, but the one on Dempster got a makeover a couple years ago. They also fancied up the menu a bit. It's not my favorite Greek coffee shop. If I'm out that way I'd rather go to Sanders' or Omega. Too bad Jack's is gone. It was one of the best.

I'm surprised denis or Hoffy hasn't brought up Burnt Toast. What a horrible fucking name for a Greek coffee shop. Almost as bad as the name of the new outdoor deck at the Piggery.

Three musts for a place to be classified as a Greek diner -
1 - Circular spinning display case filled with desserts.
2 - Fifty percent or more of the employees must be related to the owner.
3 - Only the owner or his wife are allowed to touch the cash register.

no POS system
everything has to be hand written on old school order pads
and the math is done on the order pad itself
double bonus if the cash register is manual too

I ran into my friend Rick Majerus there once. Had a big plate of food. I asked him what he thought about the Cubs this year. He threw his rice pudding at me and told me off. Man, that was a night.

My in laws love Sanders. They fit that demographic of pensioneers who will sit there for a couple of hours eating breakfast and drinking multiple pots of tea. It was awkward at a family party when my dad told them he wouldn't serve their food to a dog.

You misspelled 'entertaining'.

Also, did he mean a specific dog, or was he remarking about any random dog?

Not sure what I'd classify this place as, but we're going there tonight. I'm looking forward to it.

There's a video on the website that shows the inside. Definitely "old school."

That painting of ships on the right wall is a paint by numbers kit. We had it in our house growing up.

Did anyone else watch Old Fashioned: the story of the Wisconsin supper club on Ch 11 last night?

It was a documentary on all the supper clubs in Wisconsin that are still operating. This was a perfect watch for Joe. I thought it was fun and interesting in the same way the hot dog one was a couple of years ago.

Wisconsin people are a funny group but generally nice people. The facial hair and fashion sense are anachronistic, like stepping back 30 years.

I didn't know it was on or I would have watched it. I'm sure I'll be able to catch it soon.

The closing credits said it was made in 2015. If it hasn't been on before, that seems like a long time between filming and showing. If you can't get a Wisconsin supper club documentary on PBS in Wisconsin-Illinois-Minnesota, your film isn't making money

AH!!! This was the little old lady who ran Peep's, my favorite hot dog stand (which wasn't even a *stand,* it was an actual building, what is wrong with you people, it was clearly a fast-casual dining opportunity) as a kid. A gravelly "what'll it be, honey" to every customer. It's called the "Prospect Heights Grill" now. Won't go.

CLOSED. For a while. Too much competition with Nikko's and Tore & Luke's all within a 2 minute walk.

Luke's closed too! Of the Rand/Thomas trinity of Peep's, Luke's, and Nikko's, I never would have guessed Nikko's would be the one to reign supreme in the end. We were a Peep's or Luke's family.

We were a Nikko's family...but it's been awful ever since the new owners took over. I work about 10 minutes from there, and went not too long ago. Just awful.

Now I go to Heffy's at 83 and Camp McDonald...good gyros.

I gave some of the best years of my life sitting in that Luke's parking lot eating and listening to the Score.

I was shocked it closed. I did notice a drop off in food quality the last few months though.
There is another Lukes about 15 minutes further down Rand in Lake County.

I'm pretty sure that one is still south of Lake-Cook in Palatine...I used to live right over there.

Yeah, Luke's became a go-to when I would pick up lunch for my grandma after I discovered Nikko's went to shit. Luke's beef used to be pretty good from what I remember.

My kids went to Hersey; they were definitely in the Nikko's camp. As for me even though we live less than 2 miles from there I think the only place I have been to on that corner is Sports Page.

Wish there was an Omega type joint in Tempe. I miss the one in Downers. Heard from a cousin recently that Juicy-O wanted $9 for a couple eggs and potatoes a few weeks ago. He'll never go back.
