About five years ago or so I got a seat belt ticket at Golf and National. It was a fifty dollar fine. I sent the money in on time but that hillbilly suburb somehow must have left my check sitting around without processing it for awhile. They then sent me notice that my payment was late and the fine had doubled. I called up and told them I paid the fine on time and wasn't paying the premium they were trying to assess. The woman I spoke with "yeah, yeahed" me. That was the end of that. Until yesterday. I received notice that my Illinois tax refund had been intercepted and paid to Schaumburg. Not only that, but they assessed an extra twenty bucks on top of the fifty they are stealing. Plus there may be an additional processing fee to send me the balance. Fuck Schaumburg.

I guess some people just can't handle the suburbs.

So they or you never found a cancelled check with the original date you wrote to make a case?

Having grown up my entire life in the Mecca, I have plenty of fun stories. But my favorite was this-

We used to ride our bikes to Meineke Pool. That is the place with the 10 meter high dive among other high dive boards. It is a decent ride from where we lived up to the pool. We had season passes, so we would go all summer. Well apparently, Schaumburg has bike patrol cops that look for people not following the rules of the road for bikes. I was 12 years old and would ride my bike on the side walks along Wise, Salem, and Weathersfield to get to the pool.

Along Weathersfield, I was riding on the sidewalk, and a guy on a another bike hops off his and grabs my bike by the handle bars. He was probably 6'4", and I had no idea why he grabbed my bike. I of course fell off the bike. I just took off running towards the pool as I assumed this guy was trying to abduct me. Luckily, when I got to the pool, one of the neighbors had just pulled up with her kids and sees me screaming for help. She literally undresses the guy about his tactics. Needless to say, I didn't get a ticket.

They didn't care about the date on the check or the postmark. It was well past that point when they started asking for the extra fifty. They posted it late so it was late. I thought about calling and arguing about it but that would likely do nothing but get me more annoyed.

By the way, seat belt laws are the epitome of the nanny state. I'd love to see them repeal those laws and basically shield other folks from lawsuits if a guy not wearing his seat belt dies in a crash.

I always hated wearing a seatbelt but the combination of my wife nagging me and the fact that there is no way to stop the dinging in my car has gotten me into the habit of always wearing it.

Yeah. This police department needs to be abolished. I have a parking ticket for parking on the street at 5:45. Apparently the overnight parking curfew extends until 6 am. Had to move cars for someone going to work the Monday after the Super Bowl, and they fucking ticketed 3 of them 15 minutes prior to the end of the phony curfew.

They probably need the money though since their police department gets in trouble for stalking or behaving like gangsters every few years. And the mayor can't drive without drinking.

There are many dumb laws and/or nanny state hypocrisies that exist only for revenue.

Why would anyone hate wearing a seat belt?

 You're not going to compare a seatbelt to a sportcoat, you fucker! Maybe you are, but I'm not going to entertain it.

I used to stay late at my girlfriend's (now wife) house in Elk Grove in high school and college. I would always phone in my car to avoid the night time ticket. However, on my last night there before we were moving in together, I feel asleep and forgot to call it into the police department. Some idiot EGV cop gave me a curfew ticket. I had been calling that in at the same house for the better part of five years and never missed it before. I couldn't believe the guy wrote a ticket.

You could probably win the case if you wanted to make an issue of it.

I'll make it contingent on the amount I get it reduced from $120.

I wrote in an explanation. And I've called cars in before. It was denied. It's theft. Very irritating.

I always thought parking restrictions were kind of strange besides for winter weather but then at my parents house they got a new neighbor who came from one of those suburbs that America deems acceptable because it is close enough to the city to have homeless people. Anyways, you couldn't park on the streets overnight so these people would park on the street until about 8pm and then move the car in and then move them back out again at like 7am the next day. They did this for at least a year for no reason at all. They could have easily just had the car they were going to use at the end of the driveway as it was a two car wide one you could fit at least 6 cars in. I don't know if it was routine or what but it was annoying to try and pull out of our driveway because the only car parked on the street in the whole town was there.

One day they must have either realized that it was dumb or they got enough tickets by forgetting that they started to use their driveway.

Also, shouldn't a seatbelt ticket really be a moving violation? These guys have this scam worked out where it's like a parking ticket. At the time I was happy about that but it gives them too much power in the enforcement. It basically came down to "Fuck you, pay me."

Think about it. Since the days of Chicago cops not going to court because they were not paid is there any recourse to get out of a ticket? 1 out of 1,000 get off? They really can do or say whatever they want. Fuck you pay me.

In terms of seat belt citations I'm guessing it is a very low number of innocents.
