Came across this this evening. It does not look like the judge some here today characterized him as. I also, thought it noteworthy that before all the madness both Scalia and Bader-Ginsburg were voted in by overwhelming bipartisan majorities and they could not be more polar opposite.

Well if his friend of over three decades vouches for him that's good enough for me.

Of course his friend is going to paint this abomination as reasonable.

Wake up!

Resist!

It's really not.

From the start, people who know what they're talking about have said Gorsuch is an exceptional jurist with sound reasoning and adherence to the law.

The crazies (which seem to be MANY of the opposition party) are the ones who have tried, and failed, to portray him as a right wing wacko.

You mean he's not a POS because of one tough to explain verdict? I mean he voted with the majority 98% of the time. Maybe all judges are right wing wackos?

I just think the support from his decade(s) old friend brings an interesting, unbiased angle. Really glad that was shared.

I agree that the column was good but can an opinion piece from a decades old friend really be unbiased?

He's his lifelong friend. Why would he write something he knew not to be true?

Not necessarily not true but slanted to show his friend in a favorable light. And it's not a criticism of the author. I think it's human nature.

When I talk about my friends I don't talk about all the bad or dumb shit they did. I highlight their positives and downplay the negatives.

There must be a billion words spent on this now and the irony is that Gorsuch surely doesn't take it personally and understands that he's a pawn in the political game following the Garland fiasco. He's obviously a qualified jurist, though it's hard to imagine that any other nomination in history was reversed at the very moment he was testifying in a confirmation hearing.

It's troubling that we can read an article that exposes a person's actual record, and then somehow claim it's author is biased for telling the actual truth.

I do take issue with the word unbiased.

I don't think a decades old friend's column can be called unbiased.

No column can be.

That's all.

You snowflakes are pretty sensitive.

If referring to Trump as a "newcomer" to politics and/or international diplomacy is biased, no column can be unbiased.

An column like the one posted is an opinion piece. There's bound to be bias.

Especially from a friend.

His column accurately states his judicial record.

Like I said, if telling the truth is bias, we are in some deep shit

There are facts in the piece. But the second paragraph is entirely opinion.

"But whatever one’s politics, whomever one voted for in the last election or will in the next, Judge Gorsuch unquestionably has the character and qualities, judgment and intellect to serve on the Supreme Court, and to do so honorably and independently."

I said earlier I agreed with the column.

I do not believe an opinion piece from a life long friend can be considered unbiased.

His record is not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact.

Yes.

This, however, is an opinion and not a fact.

"Neil is, and always has been, a man of profound character and kindness, decency and honesty, humility and integrity.

A Senate that evaluates nominees based on their character and integrity and intelligence confirms Judge Gorsuch, just as it confirmed Justice Scalia 98-0 in 1986 and Justice Ginsburg 96-3 in 1993."

What are those things called when judges publish their rulings? I forget. I think it starts with the letter "O"...

Quote:
It might be fair to ask whether TransAm’s decision was a wise or kind one. But it’s not our job to answer questions like that. Our only task is to decide whether the decision was an illegal one. The Department of Labor says that TransAm violated federal law, in particular 49 U.S.C. § 31105(a)(1)(B). But that statute only forbids employers from firing employees who “refuse[] to operate a vehicle” out of safety concerns. And, of course, nothing like that happened here. The trucker in this case wasn’t fired for refusing to operate his vehicle. Indeed, his employer gave him the very option the statute says it must: once he voiced safety concerns, TransAm expressly — and by everyone’s admission — permitted him to sit and remain where he was and wait for help. The trucker was fired only after he declined the statutorily protected option (refuse to operate) and chose instead to operate his vehicle in a manner he thought wise but his employer did not. And there’s simply no law anyone has pointed us to giving employees the right to operate their vehicles in ways their employers forbid. Maybe the Department would like such a law, maybe someday Congress will adorn our federal statute books with such a law. But it isn’t there yet. And it isn’t our job to write one — or to allow the Department to write one in Congress’s place.

A disagreement must boil down to an interpretation of the relevant federal statute. Which mismatch, granted, certainly warrants further discussion and exploration (does "operating" a vehicle you believe to be "unsafe" include staying in the cab of a semi-tractor without heat in -14 degree weather? What would that interpretation of the term "operate" mean for other federal workplace law?).

I understand why the Dems are doing what they're doing, but don't agree with it.

This was their chance to step up and say that they're not playing the same political games that the GOP played last year....a chance to break the cycle of hypocrisy.

I think the Dems also need to choose a clear message. It needs to be either:
1) This guy is a right wing whacko.
or
2) Obama deserved to get his guy confirmed.

Fighting both of these things at the same time just looks bad.

You can tell the truth and still be biased. The guy that likes Trump might call him an experienced businessman. The guy who hates him could call him a political neophyte. Both things are true but that doesn't mean there is no bias.
