I think a guy refusing to leave after being told so is being a dickhead. He was told to get off the plane. He overreacted. The cops overreacted. Now everyone is up in arms about it. If this was some dudebro getting removed from a baseball game, no one would care. They would say that the owner of the building has a right to remove him and he should leave when told to. This guy should have left but he's special so god forbid the rules of us mortals apply to him.

I wouldn't have gotten off the plane if I wanted to be somewhere. Why do I have to get off?

Are the "rules" part of a binding contract? Do we have any contract lawyers here or just a bunch of real estate hacks and divorce guys?

He got a random draw. Bad luck. Get off United's property.

I don't think anyone is arguing United's legal right to what they did, the debate is from a moral perspective, they are wrong. Starting with their refusal to pay market rate for bumping a passenger.

The rule where they told him to get off the plane because he got bumped. He doesn't own that plane.

He does own the rights to that seat for that flight though, doesn't he?

Does that apply to your apartment if the landlord has another guy who wants to pay him more or needs it for his mother-in-law? Of course we know it doesn't. There is a contract in place. That's why I asked about the terms of the ticket purchase.

I don't know what the legality is. Though I'm sure it doesn't include being dragged off the plane.

Got it. I'm not in that boat. Without that law, we couldn't keep suspicious looking A-Rabs off airplanes, which is paramount. I'm just on the moral angle.

This.

Is there somewhere in the United ticket agreement that statues, "You are subject to being randomly taken off a flight you are already on so we can put some late arriving employees on in your place"?

Can you be removed from a Sox game even though you bought a ticket? From a concert? Can you be removed from a taxi even though he already stopped and picked you up?

Due to violation of rules set forth on the back of your ticket you purchased, yes, you can be removed. But there is a stated code of conduct, not a statement of "we sold too many tickets, so you're going to be bumped for the 3rd assistant ticket sales supervisor because he just showed up and wants a seat".

2 different situations here, Hanklin.

I doubt buying a plane ticket is the same as a signed Lease document. It's akin to buying a ticket to a baseball game.

They should bump people based on weight. That's something we all can get behind.

That goes back to the original question of "if they were going to start bumping people, why do they do it after boarding?"

$800 credit and you have to use it in a year. Not surprised nobody took it.

No idea. They probably screwed the pooch. Doesn't absolve the screamer from not complying with their request.

You'll notice they didn't drag off a guy who was well-dressed. They pulled off a doctor in pajamas.

Fixed this for you.

For sure. I'd be raising holy hell and demanding a hell of a lot more than $800 if they bumped me involuntarily...BUT I'd be doing it off the plane and letting the rest of the people get on with their lives. This guy is an asshole. Thinking he is an asshole doesn't mean I think United handled this in the best manner.

Ah, the ol' "Banshee Scream and Asian Blanket" approach. I actually use the same approach whenever the waiter brings a check to our table. Haven't paid for a meal in seven years.

A flying credit only, with a term expiring in 1 year is probably the shittiest comp package i have seen for bumping a flight until the very next day. I have seen Southwest offer similar $$$ for a bump with just a 6-8 hour resulting delay.

"b. The priority of all other confirmed passengers may be determined based on a passenger’s fare class"

So that means first-class probably isn't getting bumped. But within coach, can they choose the people who paid the least for their ticket?
