I've been having this debate on one of the Wildcat message boards. Everyone finds it embarassing that Fitz G doesn't have a coach's show. I personally think they are insipid and poorly executed (in general). I think a coach's time is better spent on the phone with recruits or game planning, particularly during the playing season.

However, everyone else seems to think that just because every other team has a coach's show, that NU needs one. They say it helps recruiting and makes our program legitimate. Lemmings, I say.

Just curious about outsiders view of this argument. Anyone watch Zook's show or any of the others?

They always seem to be programming for bumpkin stations in college towns. Few would watch that in Chicago.

I watch Kirk's show but you don't learn anything new from the show since on his show, they recap the game from the week before, have a feature on one of the seniors and a short look ahead to the upcoming week.

GD, I couldn't agree with you more. But put yourself in the shoes of the Cat's fans. Do you think it's embarassing to the program NOT to have one? Do you think it could marginally help recruiting to get potential prospects an opportunity to know the team and coaches? I think the answer is no because time is better placed elsewhere, but I seem to be in the vast minority.

The way the shows are set up, I'm guessing the coach spends a total of one hour on it and it's done on Sunday so there isn't much for him to do other than comment on the game yesterday and the up coming stuff.

Nobody watches that crap except diehards. Do you honestly think some 18 year old kid is going to make a decision to attend NU b/c of a coaches show? I don't think that meatball kid would have the grades anyway.

Also, with the Big Ten Network now in well over 25 homes, it is searching for content and I think it's a mistake for Northwestern not to have a show to put up there against every other program that has theirs showing 2-3 times a week.

So, the one NU grad of that 25 can watch it...

Vince you are a diehard, are you not?

Personally I think Coach's shows are for dorks like me.

I can see how a father who is looking for more info on a coach would seek something like that out. However, I just think that the time spent preparing that (Particularly in season) is wasteful. Some think that by NOT having one, NU doesn't look like a real program (insert joke here), but I think that is a lemming excuse.

I'll be honest. I love the Big Ten Network. Doesn't cost me a dime extra and I get pretty much every Iowa football and hoops game now.

And yes, I am a diehard. I love me some Hawkeye sports. I even find myself watching women's hoops and wrestling from time to time.

Outstanding. I was in Durant one night. Talk about your small town Iowa.

Don't forget Grandma Jo from Lake Zurich.

I think it's about as valid as the argument that Coach K got an edge in recruiting because of his American Express ads.

I spent an evening in Durant many moons ago for a softball tournament. Not highly recommended. The local pub sucked.
