Funny; I am reading The Rivalry, an excellent book detailing the first meeting between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, and the Boston fans gave Russell a hard time, to say the least, when he first got there. Of course, it wasn't just Boston; after winning the NCAA title, Russell got to meet Ike in the White House. On the way back home, the family drove through Louisiana, where they hailed from, and they couldn't eat in most restaurants.

In 1991, I was watching the Sox play Boston at Fenway. Clemens was pitching. Frank Thomas was at the plate. During a lull in Paciorek's goofiness, I distinctly heard a fan yell out, "Come on, Roger, strike this ni**er out!" (It was the same series where Robin and Frank went back to back and later Frank hit one on the roof of some building across the street.)

Look, I'm biased like everyone is and on my bad days, I have racist thoughts. And I think some talk about race is a smoke-screen. But damn....how angry do you have to be to a) act on your racism and b) do so in public? Fucking unbalanced.
