queer or gay

'Queer' has been an anachronism for decades ... its equivalent is closer to a word that vaguely sounds like "pick a bunny" rather than "nagger", and 'gay' hasn't been stripped of any perceived 'power', it's just that MANY tend to not want to deal with the aforementioned blowback for saying it ... B&B, for example, didn't evolve because they evolved, they 'evolved' because of corporate liability - people still give that word all the power they used to, now they just pretend to be careful about it. Otherwise the Simpsons and the Anchorman soundbites would still be rolling to this day.

That's not accomplishing anything lasting, it's just delaying the return of it by folks like a certain recent pseudo-victorious voting block to continue their bigotry with either bringing the word(s) back or taking more drastic means (see AL adoption thread).

Removing any reason to say the word (or the like) is what the goal should be, not telling people what they can and cannot say because reasons.

They refer to their community as LBGT. It sure seems someone other than me thinks its been stripped of its power to offend.

It's used in the same exact way and for the same purposes as any racial/ethnic slur. They are all on the same level in a rational world.

"If you don't agree with me, you're irrational" isn't a real argument. I know this is a sensitive subject for you, so let's just agree to disagree.

It's ok to be wrong...again. It won't change the opinion we already have of you.

It's not wrong. Polock is used as a joke, not to dehumanize. You can't say the same about the other word.

You are clearly still mad...again, about that crack two weeks ago. Let it go.

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about. I take and give shots gladly every day. I have no memory of any particular one. I don't even take offense at the frequent slurs I see here despite that being one sin claimed against bigfan. I have made it a running joke

Your first paragraph is just straight out incorrect. You are focusing on my ethnicity. I wrote early on that they weral words of that variety were equal

I have spoken my part. I'm done on the topic because a black person hasn't commented for several pages and they're probably laughing at my bald white idiocy trying to speak on their behalf.

I have to tap out, too. Leash did a pretty good job explaining why those words aren't on the same par. Dolphin just tells those who disagree that they are wrong. How much more "No, you!" can we do?

One of my favorite movie scenes in all of cinema history uses both pussy and the shortened version of burrito. Also has dyke in there for good measure.

This is complete bullshit. I've deleted or edited MANY posts with ethnic slurs. Admittedly I don't see every post or know every word that's offensive. Whenever these things are pointed out they're removed. You've pointed out several posts that I have removed or edited because they were offensive. The problem that people had with BF is that he allowed MANY of them to stay even when they were pointed out and he occasionally crossed certain lines himself.

I learn something new every day. When people said mean things about the size of my head I never knew it was the same as the n-word. When I jokingly call my oldest son a midget I wasn't aware that it was just as offensive as the n-word.

See, HG? You are a deep MF'er. You summed it up very well.

I agree with all you said, and I disagree completely with dolphin.

Anyone is free to take offense to whatever they want, but you are also free to be ridiculed. Saying "the p-word" (lol) isn't the same as saying the "n-word." It's the most powerful word in American English, and it's due in large part to its use and the history of black-white relations in our country. MANY ethnicities have racial stereotypes, but only blacks were brought over as legal slaves, who were considered to be 3/5 of a person, fought for their freedom, and then still didn't have the rights of a white person until very recently (and some would say still don't). That word is a reminder of that awful history and of everything that comes with it. It is used solely to dehumanize and tell someone that they are worth less than you because of the color of their skin. If "the p-word" does similar things to you, then you might have some issues. Europeans had their struggles in America, but it's not even worth mentioning in the same context as blacks and the vitriolic words (still) used to describe them.

I understand what you're saying, and in general, I'd agree, but it's hard to persuasively tell people they don't have the right to be pissed about being called a certain word (or, in a wider context, being treated a certain way). It assumes too much and can be needlessly divisive (especially in a time of economic anxiety). It also sets up this weird hierarchy of suffering that people base their moral judgments on and then use conformity, rather than reasoned argument, to support those judgements. Bunch of mafuckers, them people.

They absolutely have the right to be offended by whatever they want, as I mentioned. They just shouldn't be surprised when people roll their eyes. Take dolphin, for example (who I give a lot of shit to but do sincerely like)... From what I know about dolphin, he is a well-to-do downtown lawyer who has a pretty good life that allowed him a lot of opportunity. He is of Polish ancestry, but - as far as I know - he's not off the boat (as my in-laws are), and he was probably viewed as a good little white Catholic boy growing up who had a bright future... and yet he has the gumption to act as though someone calling him "the p-word" resonates the same as when black people are called the "n-word"? My issue isn't as much with people getting offended about "the n-word" as it is people of the white upper crust trying to act as though they can be viewed as a "victim" in any context, including slang used to describe them. I have a better word - "drama queen". (again, that isn't specific to dolphin, but it's laughable that anyone who has had such a lucky life - myself included - would compare their derogatory slang to that of African Americans).

So then you also think it would be ok to use that word toward a wealthy African American?

The better word would be "incomprehensible", which is how I would describe your rules for determining the hierarchy of offensive words.

The truth is, you know that I am correct but it just doesn't feel like I am.

It's ridiculous to say that if someone intentionally hurts me that I am not hurt because I can retreat into some perceived warm nest and lay my head on a gold bed.

I don't know that you're right. I think you're 100% wrong. I think you yearn for a world where things can be boiled down into simplistic opinions like this one. We all do to some extent. But that's just not how life is: if I extrapolated your logic, the words "nerd" and "n*****" are both equal because they are both capable of offending.

Well, it means the person saying them probably isn't very bright. But it takes a special kind of sensitivity for a white man in America to take offense at being called a cracker or honkey.

No he isn't.

As you said it may not be realistic, nor do they have the same historical connotations in America, but any derogatory term hurled in anger is the same. It is intended to put down the target.

The question is whether they're equal. Do you think calling someone a "dork" and calling them a "n*****" is the same? They're both intended to put down.
