No he isn't.

As you said it may not be realistic, nor do they have the same historical connotations in America, but any derogatory term hurled in anger is the same. It is intended to put down the target.

That's ridiculous

I think the world is just fine using all those words. They apparently mean nothing

Well, it means the person saying them probably isn't very bright. But it takes a special kind of sensitivity for a white man in America to take offense at being called a cracker or honkey.

But the intent of the language is the same irrespective
Of the ability of the hearer to cope with the message

If it were the other way around then it would be ok to call anyone anything as long as that person had grown a sufficiently thick
Skin

It doesn't matter what the intent is. If I decide ketchup = derogatory term for polish people and yell "you fucking ketchup" at you, I doubt it would have the impact intended. If you think that analogy is ridiculous, then I would expect you to change your mind about cracker and honkey.

It's really not.

Someone calling leash a fucking burrito and calling ltg a fucking n***er today both are meant to degrade them.

So it's history and not intent that makes the word offensive?

See my post above. Intent isn't really all that relevant. You can't admit that no word has the same historical connotation as n***** and then at the same time say any slur is equal to it.

And let's also cut this bullshit of "the ability of the target to cope with the slur" shit. Words have meanings and historical connotations attached to them. It's fucking ridiculous to say that a black man being more upset about being called n***** is more sensitive and has less thick skin than me shrugging off someone calling me a Mic because Im irish.

No, it's you saying that all derogatory terms are the same and then saying it's "dumb" when I give you an example of a derogatory word that doesn't fit that narrative. If you don't think "dork" equals "n*****", then all derogatory terms aren't the same.

Ok. Then it is your opinion that the multiple more modern slurs for an African American are more acceptable.

If I thought ketchup was symbolic of a horrible stereotype we would have to odds. On the other hand if I thought it was just a recognition that I was from
Ketchupland, we
Would be fine

All slurs matter.

I learn something new every day. When people said mean things about the size of my head I never knew it was the same as the n-word. When I jokingly call my oldest son a midget I wasn't aware that it was just as offensive as the n-word.

You cool with saying it to a midget?

Careful ... they'll be very short with you.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/ ... story.html

Fenway Park fans had just cheered Orioles center fielder Adam Jones, who, the night before, was the target of a racial slur and a bag of peanuts hurled by a Boston fan. A Kenyan woman finished singing the national anthem, and Hennick basked in the unity of that song, sung by a woman of color, a moment of hope after the disturbing episode the night before.

And then it happened. A middle-aged white man, wearing a Red Sox hat and T-shirt, leaned over to Hennick and used a racial slur to describe the woman’s rendition of the anthem.

Once Hennick notified team security, the man who uttered the epithet was ejected and barred for life from Fenway. Team officials said the lifetime ban appears to be highly unusual, if not unprecedented. Red Sox president Sam Kennedy called Hennick on Wednesday to apologize for what happened, according to Sox spokeswoman Zineb Curran. And Hennick said the Boston Police Department’s civil rights division contacted him to discuss the episode.

This surely won't end in absurdity.

Seems like you're vacillating between intent is all that matters and intent + historical/cultural connotation matters.

Are we living in bizarro world? That is the position you are taking, not me

If you called me a lamp with malicious intent we would have a disagreement. If you called me the other stuff as a friend we would be ok...just as it happens between friends every day

OK. Have a good night - I'm out of arguing energy. I just want to say that I don't see how "hayseed" and "Polack" (said it!) are different according to your own rules. But it never crossed my mind to even be offended about being called "derogatory" terms for rural people. And I certainly wouldn't compare them to the "n-word."

Good night.

Your first paragraph is just straight out incorrect. You are focusing on my ethnicity. I wrote early on that they weral words of that variety were equal

This is complete bullshit. I've deleted or edited MANY posts with ethnic slurs. Admittedly I don't see every post or know every word that's offensive. Whenever these things are pointed out they're removed. You've pointed out several posts that I have removed or edited because they were offensive. The problem that people had with BF is that he allowed MANY of them to stay even when they were pointed out and he occasionally crossed certain lines himself.

Just so everyone is clear on this I have never once private messaged to have anything removed. You all have seen everything I have said on the topic, just in case I was being portrayed as someone who is regularly taking offense

But here is where you are wrong, no one is denying history or the unacceptability of the word. However a punch in the gut is felt the same by everyone

And it's difficult for me to believe that you who claims the greatest offense doesn't understand that

It's not like you can say "hey you only stole 1% of my soul with that word"

Of course, but intent can't be the standard either because it's impossible to measure intent. That's why it's all subjective and historical context matters, as does the emotions it conjures of those who are impacted.
