"Demon in Profile" https://soundcloud.com/subpop/the-afgha ... in-profile

It's pretty solid, feels a little more like the Twilight Singers with that driving piano, which I guess is to be expected. Probably gonna be as good as Dulli's semi-recent output, which is still damn good, but short of Gentlemen, Black Love, and the first half of 1965.

Shaping up to be a great year for new releases: Afghan Whigs, Mountain Goats, Magnetic Fields, Jens Lekman, New Pornographers, and even Lorde!

Yeah, it's good, just don't watch the video where she's sticking her head out a car window like a golden retriever. It looks like it came out of one of those John Green books-turned-movies where some guy is like "perhaps this quirky/difficult/dying girl will save me."

First time through, I already like it a lot. I've never had any deep sentimental attachment to the NPs like I do the other bands I listed (well, not Lorde), I just like listening to them. I'll probably have this one in heavy rotation for jogging. Good hot sunny day music.

My first criticism of In Spades? "Birdland" is so good and could have built up into something even better. So far, so good. I love this band, whether you're calling them the Afghan Whigs, the Twilight Singers, Greg Dulli's Big Swinging Dick, whatever.

"Arabian Heights" kicks too much ass. It's like Achtung Baby meets Stax.

"Demon in Profile," like I said, has that Twilight Singers lounge piano sound. But man, it's got feeling.

"Toy Automatic" is the first weak spot, feels like Whigs By Numbers, but it picks back up with the next two cuts. "Light as a Feather" fucks.

And what a one-two punch to close it out. Favorite album of the year so far, but I'll admit that I'm sentimental about this band. Let's get Erotic Lawyer and Baby McNown's thoughts.

Listened through a second time out on the trails, which is good, because hot and sweaty is the best way to listen to this band. I was struck by how percussive it is. Very martial. I could see where someone would call "Arabian Heights" Dulli-by-numbers as well but all the parts are so good and come together so well. That little snarl of a guitar lick, the processed drum loops, the howling vocals, it's all good.

I've been so out of it I forgot it was out until I saw their post of the vinyl right behind a friend's band with the same announcement chased by the tweet from Metro about the concert. I'll make sure to take a listen this week.

I like "Toy Automatic" a lot more than I did the first couple times through and like the closer less. I still wish "Birdland" had been an opening epic approaching the level of "Crime Scene Part One." But still, what a good album.

I was listening to this streaming before my vinyl came in. Definetly a twilight singers album, but that is just fine by me. I woukdnt buy gentleman coming from current Dulli.

So I listened to the two songs that they had on iTunes and Spotify. Then I got the streaming notice and I am with you Birdland got me immediately. Perfectly paced album which Dulli is pretty good about (ignore the first twilight record or congregation and before).

I warmed up to this immediately. Do To the Beast took me almost two years to like. Now this album will never the raw brutality of Gentleman or the perfect Black Love. Even Blackberry Belle has just a nerve you can't touch. In Spades has a tight run time excellent sonic textures classic Dulli vocals and refined songwriting.

I don't know that this is much different feel wise than Do to the Beast just much more appealing to the ears. These two new albums are like Check Your Head and I'll Communication to me. They had a sound they worked in and it spilled over and refined it in the followup. I don't know if you have seen video of birdland live but I am not sure I like that lol. I get the concept but Greg looks a little too stiff doing that.

Toy Automatic I definetly warmed up to also. Hands down my least favorite on first listen but I warmed up to it. Definetly sits well. I do agree not a terrible closer but not the best either. You can't go open to close like black love every timE.

May was great being a Dulli and Lynch fanboy and having great content released by both.

Not shocking but sad nonetheless. By all accounts just a great guy.
